ASUS has announced the MeMo Pad ME172, a 7″ Android tablet that sells for USD 9. That’s about PHP 6,400.00. This announcement comes about half a year after Google announced the Nexus 7 tablet (available here via SMART Communications) which is also made by ASUS.

We don’t have official word on the local SRP but it should logically be in the PHP 6,000 range. That’s because it’s so close in price to the Nexus 7 (USD $ 199.00), anyone should be more inclined to get save fifty dollars more to buy the bigger brother. But still, if you aren’t willing to shell out a bit more, do know that the 7″ Memo Pad still brings a good specs listing:

Android Jelly Bean 4.1
7″ inch screen
Single core 1 GHz VIA WM8950 CPU w/ Mali-400 Graphics
1.0MP front camera with f/2
1024 x 600 with 720p HD resolution (not IPS)
8GB or 16GB configurations
140-degree viewing angles

Here’s what you’re letting go compared to the Nexus 7. The MeMo Pad doesn’t come with a better graphics card, the high end Tegra 3 from NVIDIA. The MeMo Pad isn’t for serious graphics (and perhaps that’s why they use it for memos I guess).
