Why Shel Israel should come to the Philippines

The announcement was made earlier today that b5media, the online blog network I write for has sent Shel “the Ambassador of Content” Israel to Europe to engage in discussions with local folk about local content.

Seems vague when reading it but this is part of a world tour series to bring home a heterogeneous idea pool of content from different parts of the world. What makes content such a powerful tool isn’t the content per se, but the context of how content is disseminated given the region, culture and other influences (technology being a prime mover) is what makes content even more engaging. If content were a top, context is what gives it its spin.

So Shel goes to Europe and one day maybe Asia, specifically the Philippines. Shel, if you’re reading this here are some reasons why the Philippines is worth visiting (apart from the fact that we are an Asian tourist hub and several b5ers reside here):

Philippine eCommerce: First Paypal, then eBay and now Google Philippines

I had previously written about Paypal being announced in the Philippines a few days ago. And then several hours later, I was able to sign up for an eBay PH seminar with Jim Griffith of eBay University.

And then, I was reading Marc’s blog, where he writes about Google opening shop in the Philippines, specifically looking for a Filipino AdSense dude and other posted job openings. Here’s your chance to work for Google!!

From the looks of the job opening, it may seem that they’re looking for a product coordinator slash call center background to deal with different AdSense clients all around the world, and then localize some of the content for the Philippines.

They say good things come in three’s, so I’m not surprised with the dawning of this neopolitan delight.

Crocs shoes in the Philippines: the gender debate

Today I decided to buy myself an advanced birthday gift (November 3 for those of you who feel generous!). I have been eyeing a pair of Crocs for the past three weeks. With eyeing came the resistance to buy, mainly because of the slightly hefty price tag of about P1,700.00 to P2,900.00.

I finally bought a pair today after checking out their latest Islander design, a “return to topsiders” look of blue and beige (other two tone colors available). So, what do you think? It’s back to topsiders with a new, modern look.

Now here’s the thing. In the three weeks that I’ve contemplated on getting a pair, I’ve received many reactions from the male and female populance about these footwear. In general, the girls hate them. The guys just love ’em.

Female arguments against Crocs

  • They are unflattering
  • They are too expensive (okay, and do you hear us say things about your Havaianas??!)
  • They are too big
  • The holes make the shoes look a bit dorky

    • Male arguments for Crocs

  • They are very very comfortable, like your entire foot is being massaged
  • The holes make the shoes look so cool
  • You can wet them and they will still be okay
  • C’mon, we’re actually raving about shoes. Can’t you let us be for once?

    • Here’s my final argument why most men want a pair. Unlike women that can get away with wearing slippers to work, men cannot. Crocs are the closest thing to ultra comfortable footwear without having to look like slippers or sandals. Get it? Okay, everyone happy!

    Ronnie Quizon: My second concert shoot

    I was lucky enough to catch a few bands on stage for the second day of Mobile Pilipinas 2006. Here are some shots I took of Ronnie Quizon, being the most animated on the microphone at “100% rockstar” character. Most of these are from Makatha with Ronnie Quizon’s animated appearance on the microphone.

    After the concert, I printed the photo above and gave it to him. I forgot to sign it. Damn. Great event though, thanks to the wonderful bands and organizers! Day three is tomorrow so if you have time on a lazy Sunday, do drop by at the Alabang Town Center!

    I haven’t photoshopped these images though. Pardon me if the huge image looks slightly grainy. This was my second concert shoot. My first one was with Sitti during the BURN Magazine soft launch.
