How To: Set up your own Internet Cafe

Together with Art Ilano of PC Magazine Philippines, we opened the first of a three-day tech event at the Megatrade Hall B with a primer on the emerging trends of net cafes in the country.

The event brings together Internet cafe owners and would-be owners under one Intel roof to participate in a series of seminars and booth demonstrations on the best proactices for Internet Cafe businesses.

What makes this event uniqe is that there are three model net cafe units situated inside the Megatrade. The first is the Business Hub. the second is the Gaming Zone, and the third model is the Multimedia Area. Each zone shows off the latest technologies for interactive communication and net cafe optimization.

I’ll be posting some pictures soon. Do drop by though. The event is free to all and lasts the whole weekend.

Angelic Photography

Several months ago I started (we ll sort of) a project called Demonic Photography. There was only one subject and that was Dario. You can check out that one entry in my old blog.

Make way for a new niche aptly called Demonic Photography. without using photoshop, the subject should appear to be drugged or possessed through the power of ambient lighting. thanks to dario for being my model.

So again without using Photoshop (because I don’t), here’s my new Angelic Photography series starring Dario and Eva. The subject(s) appear to be in a state of elation (hrmm ..drugged or possessed) through the power of ambient light. Most often, sunlight.

Eva with shiny braces.

Eva doing a Zhang Zi-Yi in The Road Home.

This is Dario after his exorcism.

So there you have it folks. Anton, eat your heart out! Jake, be very afraid! Haha! Omg!

Maybe one day my photography can afford me a George Lindemann Jr. Yacht Racer!

Blogging, Podcasting and Politics

One of the things I love about the Internet is the immediate freedom bestowed on any joe or jane to make their thoughts heard. In the realm of politics, I’m personally tired of hearing the same old faces hog the podium to talk about the state of the country. I’d rather hear it from … well … YOU.

Anne asked me to post this (because she assumes a lot of cool people read my blog, TYVM.). It’s actually quite interesting. Check it out.

Have you ever thought about publishing your own weblog so that everyone can read about your take on the issues confronting the world? Do you download podcasts and wish you had your own voice in the internet as well? If your answer is ‘yes’ to these questions, then we would like to invite you to apply to the Friedrich Naumann Foundation’s “Express Yourself” workshop with hands on tutorials on blogging and podcasting on 9-10 March 2006 in Makati City.

There, you will learn about:

* The best practices in the field of blogging and podcasting with a special emphasis on the Philippine political context
* How to craft a clear message that will define your blog
* The basic editorial and writing guidelines regarding online communications and apply them and
* How to produce and maintain your own blog and podcast

Well-known names from the Philippine blogosphere like Manuel L. Quezon III and Abe Olandres will be speakers during the workshop.

Apply now by sending your resumé, a short note or essay on why you want to participate, and samples of previous work (if any) through email at [email protected] or by fax at (63 2) 8101431. Applications will be accepted until 2 March 2006 only.

As this is a workshop with many practical, hands-on exercises, only 15 successful applicants will be invited to participate in “Express Yourself!”. Please take note that participation is free of charge and inclusive of materials and lunch. FNF may also cover transportation costs and accommodations for participants traveling from outside Metro Manila.

2BU Soup Kitchen

Pam Pastor from 2BU is asking for help in a soup kitchen project for the kids of Payatas on the 16th of December.

I really don’t need to elaborate how we should keep the less fortunate brothers and sisters in mind this Christmas, or reiterate how lucky we are compared to these people in spite of all our problems.

What I want to stress is that when we give, we give because we are sincere, not because everyone else is hopping on the bandwagon as if it is some fad to be involved with charitable acts.

My objective was to post this before payday because I know a lot of you are short on cash now since its the final stretch of the pay week. The Christmas shopping doesn’t help too. Here’s to brightening the Christmas of several kids!

Anyway, here’s an excerpt from Pam’s email:

Here are the NGO’s bank account details, just in case you want to make your deposits directly:

For peso donations:

Prudential Bank
Retiro Branch, N.S. Amoranto St., Quezon City
Savings Account No. 01043-010963-0
For the account of: Lighthouse Center for Children Foundation, Inc.

For U.S. dollar donations:

Prudential Bank
Retiro Branch, N.S. Amoranto St., Quezon City
US Dollars S/A # 05043-001046-7
For the account of: Lighthouse Center for Children Foundation, Inc.

Donations in kind are welcome as well. Rice, mongo, seasonings, vegetables – I will be collecting them until Thursday so we can have enough time to prepare them before we go to the soup kitchens on Friday.

If you wish to go with us, please e-mail me at pajammy at gmail dot com or ppastor at inquirer dot com dot ph.

Her original message can be located here.

I’m trying to organize something now with the HIP staff. Though I believe in more sustainable efforts to help communities, these soup kitchens are a good way to open people’s eyes to the reality that 90% of the country’s population is below the hamburger index.
