A few months back, a few Filipino bloggers wanted to organize a “bloggers for bloggers” event similar to Gnomedex. Of course, Gnomedex was sponsored by Lockergnome which meant they had the resources to pull this off. At that time, we were looking for a sponsor for this type of event which would be geared more towards serious bloggers, which basically allude to adjectives like: prolific, stat-crazy, and “pro-.”
So here we are, and guess what? We may finally have a sponsor for this event to be held in a few weeks. The first item on the agenda is to think of a KILLER NAME for this event. Any suggestions?
Band of Bloggers is out. Some other suggestions include:
1. Blogcon
2. Philblog
3. Philippine Blog Summit
4. Father Abe-raham and the Pinoy Top Bloggers
Note that this is a bit different from the iBlog Summit that is held once a year. This event will be a bit more targeted towards specific problogging and blog optimization topics.
I met up with Gail and Marc this afternoon before going to the gym (a gym! you’re finally going to the gym? the full story for another day) to discuss some business. We talked about several things including some logistics that are being made in the WWW.
And so this question came up: What do you do when your site is expecting a huge AS IN TIPPING POINT PROPORTIONS amount of traffic?
Here is what you can do:
1. Warn your webhost guy. If you’re friends, this is very easy to do. If you really hate the service of your host, you can go ahead and crash his server. Heehee.
I learned two things today. First, making use of powerful and controversial headlines such as “Will Gail get sued for blogging?” is a neat way to grab attention.
So Globe Innove made first contact with twelve bloggers on Thursday. The food was great, the free-flowing alcohol was even better.
There were two sets of interactions going on that night. First was the blogger-to-blogger osmosis effect where:
We did the typical “my PR is bigger than yours” spiel
We talked about what Adsense bought you last month
We pulled out our dSLRs and took photos, once more
The second type of interaction was the Globe-to-bloggers outreach program where they presented some of Globe’s new products, got feedback about some of their services, and analyzed blogger behavior which included their online schedule and other demographics.
Conclusions
As a “meet and greet” for bloggers, it was something we could have organized ourselves, but kudos to Globe Innove for taking the (baby) steps to recognize bloggers as a sizeable and highly influential demographic.
I just wish that the company had taken a more grand vision and actually have bloggers try out the menagerie of services they offered, as mentioned by J.Angelo in his blog.
The evening was basically a mix between a focused group discussion slash free consulting about trends in the blogging scene such as viral marketing, where Filipinos stand in today’s blogging industry, and advocacy.
As a blogger who helped organize this event, I am wondering what phase 2 of the plan will be, if there be any. The last thing I want to happen is to have companies take advantage of bloggers by pulling them into the “dark side of blogging” by buying them out without full disclosure.
Are you Filipino? Do you own a blog? Can you handle hanging out with really cool folk like this guy, this other guy and this other really cool guy? (I’m not cool. I jut like taking pictures and writing.)
If you have what it takes, then join us every month for the Band of Bloggers “wala lang” sessions. Topics include:
Blogging
Monetization
Pop Culture
Photography
Reasons why my girlfriend left me and other love advice from this guy (best reason to go!)
Okay, that spiel sounded really stupid. But seriously though, the past few months has been quite interesting for local bloggers meeting up casually to exchange notes over sisig and crispy pata.
One thing I’ve noticed though. Most bloggers are practicing geeks and the latter have the tendency to get along quite well. A retinue of skills that most people in the industry posses include at least two of the following:
[] maintains a blog
[] plays an instrument
[] into photography
[] dabbles with photoshop
[] watches anime
[] knows how to program
[] girlfriend left him / her because of hobby obsession
[] knows how to use at least 2 types of operating systems
[] particiaptes in online forums and discussions
