There is more than meets the eye. Unaware of the previous attrition between the Autobots and Decepticons, Cobra Commander treads on icy ground by putting the two factions too close for comfort, which goes to show that knowing is half the battle.

This comic crossover series was released in 2003 by Image and surely would cater to geek fantasy if this made the next movie. Wishful thinking on my part.

Windows 7 demo over Starbucks
Yeah. Even if I knew, from the back of my mind that Windows 7 will NOT install under CrossOver (CrossOver installs apps, not OS’s!), it was still worth a try.
I guess I must do this the hard way.
This afternoon, a rediscovered friend by the name of Johnny Benitez gave me a short run through of Windows 7’s beta release. Johnny works for Microsoft (argh! I envy his super cool title there!) and he gave me a short demo using his kick ass tablet PC. No screen shots here, but oh well here goes:
First. In the same way that Mac OS X can quick view into documents by pressing the spacebar, Windows 7 has its own little innovation by being able to “peep” within minimized windows on the taskbar. For instance, if you have 5 open tabs on Internet Explorer 8 (!!!) and they are all minimized, you can peek into the contents of each by mousing over each individual tab on the sidebar. Way cool. As a Mac user, I’m glad they didn’t rip off what OS X does for previewing documents. The peek function is definitely useful.
Second. Windows can lock on to certain parts of the desktop. Drag a window onto the left and it resizes to occupy 50% of the left of the screen. Same goes for right. This allows you to work on 2 windows with an easy resize. Dragging the window to the top of the screen maximizes a window. Dragging and “shaking” the window to and fro minimizes all other windows except the one being dragged.
Third. Windows 7 is noticeably faster than Vista. I guess you can say that Windows Vista = Windows 7 Beta. We were all fooled! HEHEHE. TEEHEEHEE. HOHOHOHO!
There are many other features inherent to Windows 7. Apart from the ones I just wrote about, Internet Explorer 8 is bundled with the web developer tool built in, and there are new power saving features (dim screen instead of sleep) that comes in the system settings.

Our portable LAN party solution
The holidays are usually devoted to a lot of gaming, especially when my friends from high school fly home from the States. This is a set up of 5 portables running on a home WiFi network – two of which are Macs. The objective was to run through Diablo II: Lord of Destruction from the start and get as far as we could.
The most interesting part was installing Diablo II on two OS X machines and networking them with three other Windoze portables without having to run Parallels or BootCamp. I’ve talked about CrossOver for Mac OS X before and this is what we used to do a native install of Diablo. Original Blizzard installers are usually compatible with both Mac and PC but it was way too geeky to resist doing a native Windows run of Diablo on OS X. 🙂
So yeah, if you’re wondering how far into the game we got … age (and carpal tunnel) dictated the best of us and we got as far as Act I, defeating Andariel.
Please don’t judge. We’re just regular geeks. 😉
I’m slowly becoming a convert to huge digital downloads. I wasn’t a big fan of torrents because of my relatively slow connection but the recent news that Left 4 Dead might not be available on retail for the PC in Datablitz (it might be available elsewhere) made me shell out cash instead for a digital copy through Steam. It took me about 36 hours to download, but it was well worth it. I’m able to backup games as well onto a portable hard drive in case I reformat.
L4D is THE game that brings together a montage of the best of zombie horror flicks, reminiscent from the fast “infected” zombies of 28 Days Later. And I’ve been playing. A lot.
What makes buying games off Steam more interesting is that I get to interact with old high school friends from the US who aren’t into the Facebook craze. Steam is fantastic – a digital download mechanism for games that incorporates its own “social networking” and copyright protection.
it works pretty much the way a social network would – every profile lists the games purchased, what game they are currently playing, how many hours clocked in and you can even invite friends into your current game lobby. Steam also has an integrated VoIP solution, a must have for most Source engine powered games like Half Life, Counter Strike, Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2.
