Rock Ed rocks Olongapo!

I’m going to attempt to make this blog entry in the style of how Pam Pastor does it. Kudos you to you Pam, because you sure know how to merge blogging with storytelling.

Who would have thought that a single text message found me trekking my way to UP Diliman’s Chocolate Kiss and making my way to Subic with people I’ve never met before.

So when Gang Badoy (teacher, UN MDG consultant, aspiring rockstar) invited me and a few others to help out with some of Rock Ed‘s activities, I said yes to joining the Subic / Olongapo leg with about ten other volunteers. The purpose was to help launch the Olongapo chapter of Rock Ed — with a free street concert a stone throw away from the Free Port.

And this is Gang between the two clowns (short for ‘Pangga’ in Ilonggo which means ‘love’). What a one-of-a-kind woman. If you’ve read The Tipping Point – she’s been regarded as all three types of influencer personae – maven, saleswoman and connector. In the same way that anybody can trace his or her roots to Kevin Bacon, a lot of people I know can trace their roots back to Gang Badoy in six degrees.

I knew Gang because she writes feature articles for SWING, which is now Golf Digest Philippines, one of our publications for HIP. So at about the same time I was doing this last year, I discovered Rock Ed and was fascinated with the spirit of volunteerism and projects on alternative means of education because I used to volunteer for work camps in different parts of the country when when I was in high school. We built a makeshift rip-rap in Cebu, refurbished an elementary school in the nickel mines in Palawan and a latrine thingee in Mindoro.

a midsummer geek’s dream

Well, it’s here! A few days shy of Labor Day and right on schedule, this issue of m|PH will be the most memorable one in our collection. That’s because something really interesting is happening next month in time for the magazine’s third year in the business.

So if you do get to grab a copy, try to grab an extra one – and laminate it or something. Maybe even turn it into bronze. Because by June, big things will come in small packages.

m|PH, the most visible home-grown magazine on mobile technology is now available in newsstands for the month of May. The jaw-dropping Kelly Misa graces the cover, making her every midsummer geek’s dream.

Travel photography is this month’s focus feature so whip out those cameras and learn a thing or two from the country’s most talented photographers – the young and restless Jake Verzora, the eccentric Andy Maluche, the fabulous Dominque James, and other talented shutterbugs like Kai Huang, Toto Labrador and Chad Samaniego. This month’s issue is also jam-packed with information on understanding the rudiments of operating your professional camera to making a do-it-yourself lens cleaning lab.

Because summer travel is in, m|PH takes a look at the WiFi scene in Cebu. Gadget reviews are abundant as the editors and team of writers showcase the new Motorola RAZR V3i, the 3G capable Nokia 6280, the powerhouse Nokia N80, and the travel-friendly Siemens ME75. There are a lot of notebooks in season this summer including the Fujitsu C1321 and the Sony VAIO TX27GP. Some cameras featured in this issue include the BenQ DC C500 and the Sony Cybershot DSC R1.

m|PH, which stands for Mobile Philippines, is a monthly publication geared towards the Filipino who is always on the go. Faithful readers have always described m|PH as the most informative and engaging among all the technology magazines because of its tongue-in-cheek humor and three years of credibility. m|PH is available at all news stands and technology hubs for just P80.00 per issue.

the tipping point and blogging

For those in the marketing and advertising industry, you may have already encountered the popular book by Malcolm Gladwell titled The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference. The premise of the book describes how certain events can become ‘tipping points’ that change the tide of social behaviors such as trends in fashion, ways of thinking, and statistics.

Gladwell talks about the three types of influencers in today’s society – mavens, salesmen and connectors who are actually the sources of tipping points for specific niches in technology, politics, fashion, business, and the arts.

iBlog 2 in a nutshell

Overall an enjoyable experience – not really because of the talks but because I got to meet the flesh behind the blogs. Now I won’t give a detailed account of the entire day’s series of seminars – because Vonjobi, the Filipino Librarian already did! He was actually sitting beside me during the Problogging panel talk. Check his entries out here:

Goodbye iBlog 2!

I met the same people and a bunch of new ones – there was Abe, Dr. Meinardus (who is now on a spankin’ new WordPress blog) and Charo. I was finally able to meet Angelo, a fellow problogger (although he does this full time), Mike Abundo, and Markku – I’m trying to get some of that PR 6 lovin!

Perhaps the most interesting panel was the problogging session that was pushed to the very end of the program. I’ve been blogging professionally for the past nine months and the panel presentation confirmed, reaffirmed and reinforced my convictions about blogging as a medium to make money.

If you missed it, Abe made his Powerpoint presentation available for download.
