ReviewMe and how it affects the status quo of stuff

There has been a lot of buzz in the blogosphere with the launch of ReviewMe, a product from the guys that brought you Text Link Ads. What astonishes me most was how a lot of bloggers have posted about this rather quickly in the past 6 hours. And the answer to this is quite obvious – they are being financially compensated for it.

As a writer for print publications, I see nothing new with the concept of paying people for writing product reviews or features. But since the true nature of blogs are hard to discern (am I blogging for fun or for profit?), one has to disclose that he or she is being paid to post something. The concept is pretty similar to being paid to work versus being paid to do something you love. (Don’t you wish you had that job that paid you to travel around the world?) In both cases what differs is the orientation of the individual towards his work – both statements refer to “being paid to do your job” but there is a difference in the person’s disposition in receiving his compensation. Thus, if we apply the same example to blogs, someone who is being paid to post falls under the latter description – being paid to do something you love.

Cupcakes by Sonja at Serendra

cupcakes by sonja.JPG

I just came back from a mini reunion with a college friend. Having heard that the gimik area of Serendra at the Fort was already open, we opted to try out the restaurants there. We had a good dinner at Portico – but what got both of us excited was a small Serendipity-ish store called Cupcakes by Sonja (Sonja makes the cupcakes, Sylvia makes the flowers?).

Oh god, the cupcakes were to die for (oh no, I’m starting to write with a funny accent). We both had the flourless chocolate cupcakes which surprisingly weighted rather heavily when we picked them up. I also took home a few vanilla cupcakes with frosting (pictured above) which I am eating right now as I blog, making this post take longer than usual. The cupcakes have prices that range from P48.00 to P60.00. They are definitely worth the price, especially the flourless chocolate cupcake that looks like it is actually one whole chocolate cake crammed into a 2″ x 2″ foil.

The new restos at the Serendra are a great place to bring dates, rekindle friendships with old friends and propose marriage. LOL

I’d like to thank Vince Yamat for recommending these new “date” places.

The good old days of MPH TV

episodeshot2.jpg

Not a lot of you may know this but MPH, the magazine that is now known as Mobile Philippines used to have a television show many many months ago. We had a couple of episodes that were produced by Poch, Ideal Minds and the staff of Hinge Media Inc (now known as Hinge-Inquirer Publications). We went off the air after a few episodes because we needed to find a better time slot. The show aired (let’s see if I remember this right) on channel 5 at 1PM every Saturday. This was a little scary too, since that time slot was dominated by the variety shows.

In any case, the show was hosted by the trio composed of Jaymee Joaquin, Franco Mabanta and Paolo Soler. There were times when some of the editors would guest appear to talk about some of the latest gadgets out in the market and we would do this in Digital Walker in Parksquare 1.

So, for your enjoyment, the staff of Mobile Philippines has uploaded the first three episodes of MPH TV. Download and enjoy!

How to register a domain name

Several folk have been asking me how I was able to get my own domain name late last year. Getting a domain name is actually much easier than one could imagine. Most people decide to get their own domain for prestige and brand recall, and yes, I do agree. It is time to claim your identity in online real estate. Of course, with the domain name comes the hosting: it is like milk and cookies (or beer and chicharon) – if you get one, you should have the other.

I bought mine from Big Sky Media a year ago but have hosting elsewhere (b5media gives free hosting to their bloggers as part of our company benefits … I am hosted here … apparently we’re neighbors with Engadget and Oscar de la Renta too).

You can also get your domain from Ploghost, and have them host it for P75.00/mo per 2GB of bandwidth per month. Another good hosting company is Mobile Hive, of whom I have dealt with in the past and have almost never experienced any downtime. They’re also good. Another good option is Pinoy Web Hosting.

If you belong to a non-government organization and would like to have your own website, Gary of Exchange.ph can host it for free. Read on for his terms.

Average Pricing for Domain Hosting Value Meal
Domain: P600.00
Hosting: P75.00/mo 2GB bandwidth
based on Ploghost data but may apply to most local web hosting

In sum total, a “starter kit” for your domain plus hosting would cost you about P1,500.00 which isn’t bad at all. This takes into account that you’re registering a non .ph site.

Some things to consider when getting a domain:

  • I never really realized it at first but getting a domain that start with the letter A or has numbers may help rank you at #1 in a web site’s blogroll. Getting my domain name to start with an A was purely coincidence
  • If possible, pay for more than one year of hosting. The search bots can detect whether your domain has been registered for the long term which will make them think that you’re in it for the long run.
  • A .ph domain costs more than a regular .com / .net / .biz. There is a story behind this but it is something best left to the annals of Google search. So, are you willing to spend an extra P1,000 a year to be more patriotic?

    The 3 Acts of Blogging

So I watched The Prestige and wow, was I blown away! On a side note, I’ve rewritten the trailer copy and applied it to blogging.

    the post.jpg
Every blog consists of 3 acts. The first act is called the Post. The blogger makes you read something ordinary, but of course it probably isn’t.

    monetization.jpg
The second act is called the Monetization. The blogger makes this ordinary something do something extra ordinary.

    blog blueprint.jpg
Now you’re looking for the secret, but you won’t find it. That’s why there’s a third act, called the Search Engine Optimization. This is the part where it twists and turns – you see something you’ve never seen before.

Voice 1: How do you do it?
Voice 2: My life is full of secrets.
Voice 1: I want to know your secrets.
Voice 2: I am on a non disclosure agreement.

This person can do what other bloggers only pretend to do … real monetization!
