Will Crocs kill Havaianas?

Maybe in the future yes but as of the moment the Havaianas store in Glorietta is selling their slippers at an insane inventory price of about P100.00 to P600.00. We were window shopping around the area when we saw a very long line extend outside the store leading to the Tower Records area.

I honestly thought it was an “autograph your Havaianas” promotion with Christian Bautista (who was singing at the mall that day). Turns out it was really just a big Christmas sale. The stocks are probably out by now but if you are going malling in Makati today, then you may still want to drop by.

Joshua Davis at Graphika Manila

joshua davis at graphika manila.JPG

I was invited to a press conference to meet Joshua Davis, the guy behind the “digital kaleidoscope art” which he uses in most of his works. Joshua was shipped over to the Philippines by Motorola to talk in Graphika Manila.

Joshua (quite a fun guy!) is a 100% digital artist who is a programmer, artist and critic all in one. His art form revolves around programs that render digital art based on sets of rules which he has put together. He then randomizes his art work and chooses the BEST among the thousands of random renderings the computer does. This is where his role as critic comes in. Some people may wonder if this is really art — pushing the space bar button while saying nah … nah … nah … oh I like this one (save!) … nah … but then you have to realize that the random effects are all based on the rules and palletes he has preprogrammed into the system, which all came from him. This allows him to churn out such detailed work in a relatively smaller amount of time than “having to draw the whole thing on Illustrator which will take ages.”

A quick tip that he shares with us is that he only shows black and white proofs to clients and only colors them AFTER he gets their signature for the final art. After receiving a signature, he gives back the same abstract work but in several color variations. Clients often get distracted by the color schemes of proofs when in fact this is actually very easy to change. What should matter, firstly, is the concept.

Other small facts:

He is also a Mac user. See? See? Okay, I won’t get into the whole PC vs. Mac war again …

And lastly, if you look closer (click!), he wears Crocs!

MaPalad Christmas Party tomorrow

The Philippine Palm Users’ Group will be celebrating the annual Christmas party tomorrow at Gilligan’s in Park Square.

The org is raffling off a Treo 680 and Treo 650 for the grand prizes as well as several other stuff courtesy of Mobile1 and Airborne Access. MaPalad has been one of the most active organizations in the past years apart from PhilMUG and there are even rumors that MaPalad officers will be sent abroad to Singapore to touch base with other Palm OS user groups (a dying breed because of a not-so-widespread platform? Well, in union there is strength!)

Naaww let’s be nice. It is the first Christmas party for the season for me and the people here are one of a kind!

Palm Treo 680 has a SRP of P28,900

palm-treo-680.JPG

I just got back from the Philippine Palm Treo 680 launch. Having known the SRP for quite a while I was a bit turned off since expectations for the PH market would more or less equal the price of Treos abroad. They said that about 0 would do it and this was very believable for the following reasons:
