Christmas Shopping Survey

My gosh, I’m finally ALMOST done with my Christmas shopping. I just need to get a few more things as well as the wrappers to decorate and label my gifts. What about you?

On the blogging front, the new Democracy poll system is out, allowing you to insert polls within posts. Check it out here.

Pre-Vacation Load: The Sad Part of ProBlogging

If you are in the loop regarding the current payment schemes of network bloggers, you will know that there are around three basic types of payment:

  • the revenue share scheme where you earn a cut from network advertising
  • the blogger salary scheme where you are paid a fixed rate per month
  • the pay per post scheme where you are paid based on the number of posts you make

If you are being paid on a pay per post basis this will definitely spell trouble when you want to go on a vacation. You can’t simply stop your routine – because that will lessen your earnings for the next month (if you’re working on a profit share basis, then this is not a problem).

To remedy this, you will need to do some double time scheduled posting. So let’s assume you do five posts per day. If you are going to be away for one whole week, that would amount to at least 25 to 35 scheduled posts which you need to do several days before you actually leave. I guess it is the same for corporate folk that try to file a leave but need to finish work that they were supposed to offset.

Unless you are a content magician, it will be really tough to try to pull off posting this amount in one go. Some tips that I have learned include:

  • do listings (new year resolution list, Christmas gadget list)
  • highlight previous posts and build on them
  • highlight the top posts you made in a certain category
  • do a top 10 of something – where each item is one post and another post for the intro and another post for the summary
  • greet your readers during the holidays in the form of a post

Do you have other ideas on how to ease the ProBlogger posting marathon?

My father, the blogger

A lot of my dad’s friends and relatives say that I took after him in a variety of ways. My dad was a Quill Awardee for Journalism, an AIM Professor and a enthusiast film photographer for several coffee table books (does Images of Manila ring a bell?) and photo exhibits by the Camera Club of the Philippines (we often argue because he is a die hard Nikon guy and I’m a Canon dude). He is also a golfer, an animal lover and he has numerous experiences with training and development, the mining industry and a bunch of other stuff I’m not really sure about. Time to pimp my dad. Hire him now as a consultant!

So that’s me and him – writer, photographer, teacher … perhaps the only thing I didn’t get was his banker abilities. He used to work with the government’s Central Bank and the now defunct Far East Bank and Trust Company. And now without further delay, my dad has resurrected his old column which he used to do for the Philippine Star titled Beyond the Bottom Line. You can read my dad over here.

I’m acting as blog admin for Beyond Bottom Lines (nicknamed BBL) and so far installed the Cutline WordPress theme from Chris Pearson. I haven’t really moved the headers around yet but will soon do after we figure out what to put.

John C. Dvorak and I rub shoulders and stuff

PC Magazine Masthead.jpg

So this is the PC Magazine masthead. Pretty neat eh? It is currently the number one technology magazine in the Philippines. With the likes of technology mavens such as John C. Dvorak, who can go wrong?

But oh, what’s this? Go, go, go … click on the image.

John Dvorak Jayvee Fernandez Heading.JPG

John and I have had our differences as writers (naks!) but it is always a pleasure working with him on something as great as PC Magazine, ayt?

Erratum: I just realized that if you’re alien to the tech community, you wouldn’t know who John C. Dvorak is. Well, how do I put it .. he’s the Michael Jackson of the technology industry been a tech journalist for the longest time, and is now a regular panel for TWiT as well as host for the Cranky Geeks show. John “I get no spam” Dvorak is best known for his blog plugs as well as his snarky, cranky and outspoken comments and articles about the tech industry.

Will the iPhone kill Windows Mobile?

Kevin Rose got his juice squeezed out of Alex Albrecht in the Diggnation podcast about the iPhone. SO it’s official, the iPhone has been leaked? Here are the pertinent details that were squeezed out of him:

  • It will come in two models, a 4GB flash and 8GB flash for $249 and $449 respectively
  • It will have a slide out keyboard and touch screen UI
  • It will have one charger but two sets of batteries – one for music and one for the phone (hmmm so you can listen to music the whole day without having to worry about your phone draining)
  • It will be small and have a “miniaturized” version of OS X
  • It will support CDMA, GSM and TDMA
  • It is coming in January
  • So if Windows Mobile 5 is for the discerning PC fanatic, then the iPhone goes for Mac users? Based on these specs (obviously not the complete list), the iPhone can actually make several users switch from Windows Mobile and Palm to this little gadget.
