After 21 years, I’ve come full circle.
I’m back at INQUIRER.net, this time taking the reins of the Technology section.
Early in my career, I worked on titles like PC Magazine Philippines, GAME!, and Mobile Philippines under Hinge-Inquirer Publications. I was also around during the early days of Hackenslash—the first video game journalism site in Southeast Asia, founded by the late Joey Alarilla under INQ7. So yes, there’s a fair amount of nostalgia here—but more importantly, there’s unfinished business.
Taking on this role feels oddly familiar, in the best way. Like slipping back into an old favorite pair of shoes.
Moving forward, consumer technology will be a major focus, but the section will also look at technology through a nation-building lens: enterprise and startups, data governance, fintech for everyday Filipinos, blockchain, proptech, edtech, and more. We’ll also continue and expand the Inquirer’s long-standing role in gaming and esports, building on the strong foundation of Inquirer Esports. Over time, our esports platforms will also evolve to include broader consumer tech coverage.
I’m also excited to be onboarding Jem Sagcal as Assistant Editor. Some of you may know her from our previous work together, but she’s also a prolific writer and editor with deep roots in esports, tabletop gaming, and technology journalism—and a game scriptwriter to boot.
There’s a lot of work ahead, but I’m looking forward to rebuilding and reintroducing the Inquirer’s voice in tech for today’s reader, in modern formats and on modern platforms.
