Maya enables Tap to Pay for Google Pay in the Philippines

·

Starting November 18, Maya Credit Card users can download Google Wallet from the Playstore and add their cards and tap their Android phones at any Visa or Mastercard contactless terminal worldwide. Soon, the feature will also be directly available via the Maya app. Support for prepaid cards will follow—positioning Maya as the only fintech building toward a multi-card, cross-platform Tap-to-Pay experience in the country.

“We’re making Tap-to-Pay truly frictionless,” said Shailesh Baidwan, Maya Group President and Co-Founder of Maya Bank. “Whether you tap with a credit or prepaid card, and starting today with Google Pay, the experience will be instant, secure and seamless. Because Maya runs both the payments and banking rails, we can deliver an exceptional end-to-end customer experience.”

“We’re proud to work with Maya to bring faster, convenient and more secure payments to the Philippines. This launch underscores our enduring commitment to accelerating financial inclusion and fueling the next chapter of the Philippines’ dynamic digital economy.” said Prep Palacios, Country Manager, Google Philippines.

A Shift in How Filipinos Will Pay

Most mobile contactless options today rely on stored wallet balances or work only on Android. Maya’s approach is different: it connects straight to users’ actual card accounts, letting them pay using their existing credit lines—and later their prepaid balances—with just a tap.

Every tap is secured by Visa-grade tokenization, which replaces sensitive card details with encrypted digital credentials validated in real time for global-level protection.  Powered by Maya Bank for digital banking and Maya Philippines for payments, Maya’s advantage comes from its most comprehensive digital finance ecosystem, giving it the ability to integrate global standards faster and scale adoption nationwide.

How to Tap-to-Pay with Maya on Google Pay

Using your Maya Credit Card through Google Pay is simple, instant and seamless:

  1. Download the Google Wallet and add your Maya Credit Card by following the instructions.
  2. Unlock your phone. Make sure your card is unlocked / unfrozen.
  3. Tap at any Visa or Mastercard contactless terminal worldwide.

No scanning. No waiting. No manual approval. Just fast, secure tap-and-go transactions— with all the rewards that come with your Maya Credit Card.

Fueling the Next Wave of Digital Payments

According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), digital payments now make up 57% of retail volume and 59% of value in the country. QR codes accelerated this shift during the pandemic, but with consumers returning to physical retail, long queues and slow scans are renewing demand for speed and reliability.

Maya expects Tap-to-Pay adoption to grow rapidly as NFC terminals continue to spread nationwide. By blending mobile convenience with the global acceptance of card rails, Tap-to-Pay is emerging as a major driver of digital payments growth.

A Universal Tap-to-Pay Future

Maya’s Google Pay integration marks a shift in how Filipinos will pay—establishing Maya as one of the first banks to offer credit card-linked Tap-to-Pay, and the only fintech advancing a roadmap toward a universal tap-based system across credit and prepaid cards and via the Maya app.
