And our second winner is…

Happy weekend! OK so here we go — I LOLED at most of the entries till about 2:00AM and decided to call it a night before I did a last glance this morning. Great entries — especially the cheezy ones (paging entries of ‘Shiela’)!

Also, sayang ang entry ni Third — he has something going, but I felt it wasn’t witty enough (and perhaps too long). But good job pa rin!:

Search. Add. Confirm. Poke. Poke. Poke. They changed relationship status. Engaged. Married. Guy forgot to send gifts on Farmville. Single.

Anyway, this was fun guys! Time to announce the winner! Congratulations to TheGreatMorinda for her short but sweet entry:

They had a baby. They got married. They fell in love.

This is a good pambawi as TheGreatMorinda almost made it in the last contest and appears to have fans among the other contestants. 🙂

Congratulations to everyone who joined! Enjoy the payday weekend!

Last Flash Fiction Contest for a Nokia X3

Hi guys! I’ll announce the winner of the previous mini-contest later as I’m still going through the entries. But I already wanted to start the thread for the final contest which culminates tomorrow night. Again, we’re giving away the final Nokia X3! Our first winner (Marlon = “Messie”) was kind enough to send in a photo with the X3, quickly expedited!

BTW, if by chance you win in the second contest, then your entries for this contest is voided (since I’m starting a new round before we announce).

Yay! OK on to the rules (which by now you’re very familiar with!)

2. The contest is FLASH FICTION. If you don’t know what it is, this is the type of creative fiction which you can do with as little words as possible. The limit is 144 characters (including the space and periods, commas, etc) so if your limit is essentially one Tweet. Leave the entries in my comments section.

Example: Perhaps the most famous is the work by Hemmingway which goes something like: For Sale: Baby Shoes, Never Worn.. English / Filipino / Taglish entries are OK. Avoid abbreviations.

3. The theme:

MYSTERY Saturday 12:00AM – Sunday 11:59PM

Clock is based on the timestamp of the comments.

4. I’m choosing the winner. If there are any discrepancies with the rules whatsoever, I’ll have final say with the rules after considering the comments from readers. Winners wil be announced a couple of hours after each mini contest ends, also announcing the beginning of the new series.

5. This contest is open to everyone from the Philippines. if you live outside MLA, we will have to ship the prize to you courtesy of Nokia. They will take care of it. If you won once, you can’t win again. But you can submit as many entries as you wish (you can even combine them if you want). Entries that are heavily offensive / done in bad taste / pornographic won’t be counted. PG-13 allowed.

6. If you submitted your entry in the previous post, don’t worry I am keeping track of them, but please for new entries, submit in the comments section below this post.

And the winner of the first Nokia X3 phone is …

There’s something utterly creepy about reading flash fiction horror entries past midnight. Especially the entries that say “I’m going to take the X3 away from you while you sleep.” HAHA! Anyway, here goes.

First of all, I’d like to give special mention to “Jerry” who submitted a horror entry that made me LOL:

ano ang nasa dako pa roon?…
si sadako!…:)

Sorry though, it didn’t win but you sure made me laugh! Also, props to Noypi with this entry that I found to be rather funny: “For sale: si Ate, mainit pa.” I also want to give a special shout out to John who made a special tool to count characters for judging entries! Thanks sir!

OK here goes! Thanks to everyone who participated. Looking through all the entries, I narrowed the whole thing to two. One from TheGreatMorinda which goes:

Time in: 9:59 am. Time of death: 9:13am.

and the other from Messie:

The river is steadily rising. There was no rain… only people jumping.

Both entries made me stop and think a bit trying to picture the scenarios in my head (one of the tricks to doing horror is the Clive Barker / H.P. Lovecraft formula where you leave most of it to the imagination). Between the two, I found Messie’s entry to be the more disturbing, hence I gladly award the Nokia X3 to MESSIE! We will send an email with instructions on how to claim your phone from the Nokia PH office.

There are still 2 more mini-contests coming up! I’ll put them up in a separate post so it will be easier to segregate.

Underwater

Worse than a needle in a haystack

This article first appeared UNO Magazine’s December-January ’11 issue

Pygmy seahorse by Jan Acosta

What does it really take to shoot underwater photos?

“Are the pygmies still there?”

The spotter nods, implying something that Jan and the rest of the group already know. At about 80 ft deep, there is a white fan coral about 1 meter high in full plumage. There’s a pygmy seahorse somewhere there. That’s what we’re looking for today.

Take a grain of rice, split it in two, and then throw one half into the ocean. That grain, split, is roughly the size of one of nature’s smallest creatures. In all irony, they’re also one of the more territorial, with their tails clasping on to the veins of fan coral, their natural habitat. To add to the frustration, pygmies take on the color and texture of the host corals. Jan, the group’s fearless leader checks his buoyancy control device, fins, straps, and tank, making sure everything’s in place.
