Thank You Hsien Hsien!

I rarely write about goodbyes on the network I work for. Truth is, bloggers come and go. Some stay for a month while others stay on for a year or two and then leave. I’d like to bid goodbye and good luck to a virtual friend I’ve made over the past several months in Dr. Hsien Hsien Lei who was channel editor for the genetics and health channel. Hsien was part of the About Weblogs fold that came into b5media several months ago.

As one who has been with b5media since the start, I’ve seen bloggers write, write, write some more and then leave to pursue their other passions. Hsien was one of those who I got to know, albeit briefly on a slightly deeper level when I opened up and asked for advice about my brother’s medical condition (he has a swollen cornea that thank God is healing well now) several months ago. Not that she gave a doctor’s prescription, but she was there to empathize and listen through about two or three days worth of rants from me.

Thank you Dr. Hsien-Hsien Lei for being part of my b5media adventure and good luck with your passions!

Nintendo DS Nights May 4 8PM Grilla Kalayaan with Pictures!

img_6417.jpg

UPDATE: Wow what an event! We had a pretty good turnout for this mini event. Favorites included Mario Kart, Brain Age, Tetris DS, Elite Beat Agents and the mini games from The New Super Mario Brothers. Congratulations to Geek Chorus, Miriam Sy, and Ryan Sumo as well as the guys from Level-Up! for an evening full of light hearted pwnage.

We’d like to remind everyone on the list that we have a mini-event on Friday, May 4, 2007. We’re having our first Geek Chorus DS Night at Grilla Kalayaan Ave. in Makati City (it’s near the Rockwell Entrance). We don’t have a formal program for this unless we come up with something clever on the day itself. But do expect a lot of trash talking, screaming and overall good-times once we fire up Mario Kart DS on full 8 player mode. Oh, and you’ll meet a lot of people with Nintendo DS(es) and enjoy a few drinks. We do expect people to mingle, we’ll have volunteers match up people depending on the game.

Boracay Photo Caption Contest

2BU correspondent Bianca Consunji has posted a photo captioning contest from our last trip from Boracay. This shot was taken by Luigi Onglao of “Xerxes” at the beach. This is what happens when Labor Day runs really slow.

Since I’m such a contest junkie, here’s one for you. Come up with the best caption for the photo and win a tub of papaya body scrub from The Body Shop! The winner will be notified by a reply to his/her caption, so just comment away. But even if you’re not into bath and body products, I hope you enjoy coming up with a caption anyway. Have fun!

On a related note, have you ever ran contests in your blog? Running contests are a good way to increase readership, comments and gain link juice. It also helps a lot in real life networking.

Philippine Social Networking: Friendster, Multiply, and now … Facebook?

Almost everyone I know in this country has a Friendster account. When it came to storing photos the easy way online, people started to create Multiply accounts in order to mass upload photos as well as to be baited by the “who has viewed this page” feature which Friendster is now offering. I also don’t need to mention the fact that a lot of music downloads are happening through Multiply. It’s sorta like a static P2P service.

But is it just me or are more and more Filipinos signing up on Facebook? While Friendster is there as an institution, Multiply is there as a mass storage service. From the looks of it, Facebook is sorta like the latter with the added perk of being able to see what type of activities are going on between your contacts.

Why I Don’t Use A Feed Reader

Let me give you the perfect analogy to my reasoning.

Would you rather talk to your girlfriend or boyfriend over the phone or meet up in person? Would you rather see the object of your affection all dressed up and cute or just hear their voice. I mean, both are okay … but isn’t seeing em in the flesh much better?

I like looking at your cute template while reading your thoughts. I like looking at your goofy profile picture too, whilst you watch me read your thoughts. I also like … clicking around on things … you don’t usually see … on your feed 🙂

Okay actually I lied. I do use a feed reader – its called Vienna – its open source and its for the Macintosh. But that’s reserved for the blogs and other sites I read to do research. For instance, the entire PC Magazine site is on my feed reader. It’s so much easier to read that way because it classifies everything according to sections, de-constructing the portal-like layout.

Jayvee encourages you to subscribe to his feed. Click on his feedreader chiclet to do so. Every time you subscribe, a bunny’s life gets saved.
