Hellgate London: The adventure thus far
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at November 16th, 2007It’s been two days since I got a copy of Hellgate London. Amidst mixed reviews from seasoned fans of MMORPGS, professional reviewers, and old time fans of Diablo II, Hellgate shines in many aspects and its defects, though frustrating, can only hope to be corrected with future patches.

Hellgate London Collectors Edition
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at November 14th, 2007
So dating hasn’t been stellar lately. I’ve decided to take up Lia’s advice and coop myself back into my geeky cave and engage in something unproductive yet fun. What timing too, because Bill Roper had also just released Hellgate London, the one and only game that is making me use my PC more often now. I’ve been waiting for this release for almost 2 years. Ack! I’m back to using Windows.
PhotoBooth and iChat Hack: Uncover Star Wars Hologram Effect
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at November 10th, 2007Been fiddling around with Leopard for the past few hours. I have a lot of things to say in the pipeline but before that, I’d like to show you a little trick I picked up while browsing the forums. In the beta stages of Leopard, a PhotoBooth effect for the Star Wars hologram was excluded for final release. For us Star Wars fans, the effect simulates the holographic transmission effect used for communications.
Here is an example with me doing the Jedi:

The effect has also become quite popular for Halloween:

And yet another one …

Listed below are the steps to do this hack.
Time Machine Makes Backing Up Fun
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at November 9th, 2007Here are some charts that show how often Macintosh users back up their data. 26% of all Macintosh users back up their systems regularly. However, only 4% make use of the auto back up feature:

Hands down, the three most eyecatching experiences with Leopard are, in no order, the new iChat moving backgrounds, the new reflective effect of the dock, and Time Machine. Apple engineers intentionally made Time Machine look this good so that people will be encouraged to back up often in exchange for the eye candy.
It is advised to purchase a “time machine” (aka external drive) that is at least equal to the total hard drive space of your current Macintosh. It is advised to run Time Machine before you go to sleep so that when you wake up the next day, the backup process would have been completed.

Happy Internet to launch WiMax service in 2008
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 31st, 2007

it seems like everybody is launching their own WiMax network. Abe mentioned Globe launching one in 2008, but assuming this is true, they are going to have a hard time justifying the price as HSDPA currently costs P3,000.00 a month. What more for a 4G WiMax dongle + service fees? You can’t just implement a WiMax network and expect peoples’ laptops to be compatible.
WiFi runs on a 2.4GHz frequency but WiMax runs on something completely different. Another dongle for us consumers to purchase then – or buy a new laptop in 2008 with Intel’s new certified WiMax doodie built in. Consumers who are currently paying P3,000.00 for Globe Visibility may want to rethink their options if Globe is really going to go WiMax in 2008.
Anyway.
Met with the Happy Internet marketing head, Marvin Cruz (he’s Microsoft PH engineer #001) over coffee. Happy Internet has been around for the past five years, albeit in a different form. Marvin and the rest of the 40 strong individuals of Happy Communications are supposedly here to make a difference. But yeah, we’ve heard that before. So let’s see what exactly Happy Internet has to offer.

Safari, oh how I love thee? (let me count the ways)
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 23rd, 2007
As almost any Macintosh user would hate to admit, I am torn between using Firefox and Safari as my default browser of choice. I love the versatility of Firefox, complete with the plugins and the sexy fact that it is developed as an open source project. But at the same time I’m also loving the way Safari renders my pages. I guess the debate is subjective for the most part – but what’s making me hesitant to make the complete switch is how Safari doesn’t support a lot of things on the web — like Facebook’s Warbook applet:

Frankly, I use both browsers. Firefox has a better download manager tool but Safari’s browsing experience is less laggy and cleaner. Safari does have a community dedicated to developing plugins, but it isn’t as tight as the Firefox community.
If you’re a Mac user, what is your default browser of choice and why? If you don’t use Safari, what would make you do a complete switch?

Unpacking the Kodak Easyshare V1253 HD camera
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 19th, 2007
Oh my, I’ve never been this excited to unpack a point and shoot camera. Kodak recently launched their new line of V-series cameras. A little bit of history: the V-series leads the point and shoot camera industry by introducing new features that you wouldn’t usually find in point and shoot cameras. The V570 for instance had a dual lens that supported wide angles. The V610 introduced Bluetooth connectivity to casual cameras. And now, the V1253 HD camera introduces HD-quality photos and video recording. Yup, HD video recording on a point and shoot camera.
Dawn of the Blogging Relations Officer
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 18th, 2007
I’ve dealt with with Web 2 companies on several occasions through their Blogging Relations Officer (I kid you not). Yes, there are such positions that exist in the new corporate set up. A BRO or Blogging Relations Officer is in charge of public relations for the blogosphere. Though it may still be far off to consider bloggers as members of mainstream media, their influence and presence in the online web space cannot be underestimated. Take for instance Fring, a VoIP service that has a dedicated page for blogger testimonials for their service (Cellphone9, my mobile phone blog is mentioned).
Does your company have a blogging relations officer?
Xoom partners with Happyslip: Send money to Lola
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 18th, 2007Lola (Filipino for grandma) needs money to buy more jewelry. What’s the fastest way to remit money to the Philippines but through Xoom?
It’s been days since I applied for my Union Bank EON card (so that I can link it to my PayPal account) but still no word. When PayPal fails, there is still always Xoom
