Video: How to resize photos quickly using Apple Mail

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at March 7th, 2008

A short 3 minute video I created on how to make use of Mail to resize huge photos. This isn’t really a trick – a lot of Apple Mail users know about the resize option but don’t necessarily use it for resizing photos back to the desktop.

Motorola’s 2008 mobile phone new lineup

Sneak Peek at Motorola

EDIT Nov 13 2008: Just heard today from a few local Motorola employees that Motorola Philippines is closing shop for good. Issues such as after sales support, etc are still up in the air.

Dispelling rumors that they are leaving the mobile phone industry, Motorola shows off their new lineup of mobile phones for 2008. I was with Mari Litonjua of Motorola last week for a press lunch as he showed off an excellent lineup of phones for the different market segments:

The W230 is the world’s cheapest MP3 phone at a mere PHP 2,490.00 without a post-paid plan

The ROKR E8 is the next-generation music player phone that comes with new technologies such as Song ID, ModeShift, and FastScroll.

The Motorola Q 9h is the follow up to the first Q, an enterprise-greared Windows Mobile phone that sports BlackBerry connectivity.

32GB iPod touch and 16GB iPhone memory upgrades … as expected.

iPod touch and iPhone upgrades

It was expected to happen. So it is no surprise that the iPhone and iPod touch have gotten memory upgrades. The iPhone is now up to 16GB in anticipation for the SDK boom and the iPod touch is up to 32GB for the same reason as well as to keep more media.

What’s more interesting is how Apple didn’t announce the new upgrade to hardware during MacWorld 2008. In the past year and a half, Steve’s keynotes have been rather segmented – not delivering everything in one big bang. Though this is just a minor announcement, I don’t see reason why he could have announced this during MacWorld ’08. The closest I could think of would be that it might derail focus on the new Apple iTunes rentals. But that also doesn’t make sense as well since the new announcements do affect the iPods and the iPhone as media storage hubs alongside Apple TV.

To iPod touch owners – do you feel cheated out of this deal, or does the USD $499.00 price tag turn you off?

Oh well. Steve does it because … he can.

FYI Digital Walker will start to have stocks of the 32GB iPod touch starting next week.

Seen: Pink iPod nano!

Pink iPod nano at Digital Walker

So her guesses were right on the spot – the pink iPod nano’s actual color is really hot pink. The stock images from Apple are actually inaccurate. Take a look at the ecstatic photo above :)

We saw stocks of pink iPod nanos being sold at the Digital Walker store in Greenhills. The 8GB model costs PHP 8,3xx.00 which is already at 10% discount.

What are you willing to try to stay fit?

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at January 28th, 2008

Wii Fit Philippines

Last month I wrote about the Nike+ running kit and how it may encourage you to stay fit. Today, it’s about the Wii Fit pack exclusively for the Nintendo Wii. Though its not out for the rest of the world to see, its currently sold more than a million units in Japan only.

This got me thinking really – what is the price we are willing to pay to stay fit? Or better yet, what are we willing to do to seem like we’re staying fit? There are lots of cheaper ways to do this but I truly feel that fitness can surely feed on our vanity. Not that I’m complaining. Probably order one of those Wii Fit devices when it comes out in Q2. Nintendo claims that in the future, you will be able to use the WiiConnect24 to interface with the Wii’s yoga mat and send data to your fitness instructor.

Science is Fun!

Peeping and excited!

When I was a lot smaller, I held a close fascination to theme parks, science projects and anything that had to do with planets. If all it took to become an astronaut was a face, I’d probably be in the moon right now. So when Anton invited to celebrate Our Awesome Planet’s anniversary, I really could not resist to go because the kiddie party included a tour inside the SM Science and Discovery Center. There I am peeping through the blinds like a little boy (And yes, those are Crocs).

On Bayan Telecommunication’s Wireless Landline Service

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at January 21st, 2008

Last year, I wrote something about how Bayan Telecommunications made a big comeback as a key service provider. Their two main thrusts were transparency as well as bringing forth the wireless landline concept. Today, PLDT has something similar. I’m still in no position to comment on quality of service for these products as I have never used a wireless landline.

@ SM Science Discovery Center

SM Science Discovery Center at Mall of Asia

That’s me and Yuga at the SM Science Discovery Center at the Mall of Asia. We were there as guests for Anton Diaz’s “triple threat” party to celebrate his eldest son’s birthday, his second son’s baptism as well as the anniversary of Our Awesome Planet, one of the most famous travel blogs in the country!

Goofing around, Yuga was able to load up some blogs on the LCD television without the use of a keyboard. The trick is to find sites with letters that match your blog’s URL, and then copy and paste each letter. MSN.com was in the browser history so that’s what helped us find our letters.

I’d write more about the birthday celebration of Aidan and Josh’s baptism but I’d prefer to leave it for another time, with more detail on the attractions. Photo courtesy of Phoebe.

Verzio Duplii Unboxed and Reviewed: Dual SIM done right?

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at December 26th, 2007

What's in the box?

This came in the mail a few days ago. The Verzio Duplii is one of two dual SIM phones manufactured by a SIngaporean company and distributed here. The phone will be out very soon. If you have extra 13th month pay to spare and have been wanting a phone that basically holds two cell signals simultaneously, then read on.

The two SIM slots are labeled as SIM 1 and SIM 2 with the primary SIM card being chosen through the Settings menu. This is usually the default number that will be used to send messages. Although when sending messages, the phone allows you to select which SIM to use to send out your SMS. Thus, let’s say you’re using a prepaid line on one end and a post paid on the other, you can use your prepaid line to receive SMS and reply using the other line seamlessly.

Wrapping Up 2007 in Technology

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at December 26th, 2007

Technology in 2007

For those of you bored in the office wondering why you’re still reporting to work at this odd time of the year, do grab a copy of the Philippine Daily Inquirer from Manong Guard and turn to the 2bu! section. I have a piece there that wraps up the highlights of technology in 2007. Consumer technology mostly, as it’s rather difficult to mention everything that happens in the entire industry. I focused more on how core competencies are shifting – Microsoft sucks at operating systems and does well in gaming for instance, as well as how the “elite” are now going mainstream with the aggressive move of Apple into consumer technology.

That’s all folks!
