Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at April 24th, 2009EDIT: Here’s an updated release of the Pacquiao vs Cotto Trainer 1 shoes!
Wow! I’d like to thank Miles for sending these photos over — the new Manny Pacquiao apparel look really remarkable! The Nike Trainer 1 shoes above will be sold in limited stock with only 49 pairs at P5,209.00. If you’re around town for the long weekend, Nike will be selling these limited edition shoes and tops in their flagship store at Bonifacio High Street on May 2 and 3 starting 12 noon. Party at mag:net after.
If you wish to receive more updates on stuff that I fancy (Nike usually sends me their new product releases ahead of schedule), click on the link below to enter your email address:
Not sure if I’d go for the shoes — too expensive, plus I already have two pairs of Nike+ running shoes (the ones that have a slot for a Built for iPod accelerometer). The shirt and windrunner trainers look fantastic though. Cool.
Ventaja Philippines: Making online SSS payments easier for OFW’s
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 10th, 2008I’ve put off writing about Ventaja for the longest time. It wasn’t a scoop from a press launch or a dinner invitation to try out their service. In fact the circumstances to meeting up with them was brought about by a whole day workshop I gave for ITMC many months ago.
I was amazed that a service like this existed. And quite glad too that at the very least we have someone, who is not from the government, taking care of this effort. So here’s the deal. Ever since I went freelance, I had stopped paying my SSS contribution. It was one of the things I wanted to pay independently, and going through this transition is in theory very easy to do. But the government officials who I talked to behind the desk made payment so hard to do! Talk about making things difficult. I mean, I’m already giving you my money and you’re making it hard for me to do so (click here for radio drama)!
This is why I find SSS payments to be so not worth it. For something that could give you a little cash when you retire, you have to go through so much trouble. What’s stopping me from getting other forms of security instead (mutual funds, time deposit, etc)? And what more if you live overseas? It’s really not worth it because you’ll be earning so much more money compared to the measly amounts you’ll be getting in return if you had paid for SSS (I think the total pay amounts to about P16,000 to P20,000 across your working career if I’m not mistaken).
SSS has its benefits. Among all the government services, others pale in comparison because these guys can deliver.
The guys behind Ventaja explained their service carefully to me. In a nutshell, they wanted to make SSS payments easier for OFW’s who really won’t see the benefit of availing because the traditional system takes 10 months (!!!) to propagate payments (ikaw nga nagbayad, ikaw pa yung na-hassle!).
Social Security System is part of the Philippine government effort to increase collection of contributions from its members based overseas. The coverage of the SSS program are primarily for retirement, disability, sickness, maternity, death/funeral and loan assistance. Every Filipinos including overseas workers may avail of the membership and it will remain active for lifetime.
SSS On-line Payment is a web based technology that records contribution payments via our website, is it part of the service available within Ventaja’s Remit Load system. Every transaction will have a unique Reference number from SSS. The system is directly link to SSS server for automatic upload of all records of payment every end of day. Transactions are posted within five (5) working days. The system will have an inquiry tool and provides payment history of customers, it is 100% electronic and completely paperless.
Guess what? I asked them a favor if they could help me with my SSS so I could pay. Tadah. Done. No hassles.
Welcome to the blogosphere, RJ Ledesma!
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at September 5th, 2008Guess who’s now in the blogosphere? RJ’s been intertwined in my life in several ways – it’s really no surprise considering this industry is really small. Welcome to the blogosphere, RJ Ledesma!
P.S. That’s RJ’s yaya on the banner, from his latest book release, Lies My Yaya Should Have Told Me.
Over the past three years, there were columns I’ve written that I’m pretty damned proud of and there are some columns I’ve written that were pretty damned to begin with. But, what the hell, I say let it all hang out. After all, what’s past is prologue. And, in this blog, we’re going to see a lot of prologue going on.
I hope to come out with a second book in early 2009 that collects the last half of my columns from The Manila Times, along with a couple of articles that I’ve written for MANUAL. In the meantime, I’ve had requests from family, friends and readers to reprint some of my older columns and other previously published work. So, by way of this blog, I plan to do the following:
1. Post the older columns that haven’t seen print since they were first published;
2. Post my current columns a week after they come out in the Star;
3. Post some articles that I’ve written for MANUAL;
4. Post columns that, for one reason or another, did not get published.
I also plan to post some totally random stuff as well – recommendations, ramblings, general lunacy. You know the drill.
Lastly, I also hope to use this blog as a sounding board to develop ideas for future columns and articles. So if you’ve got any ideas that you think would make for an interetsting column, please feel free to drop me a line. I would love to hear from you guys. [RJ Ledesma]
First hike after 6 years: Mt. Daguldol
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at April 13th, 2008Some of you probably know GMCI, one of the more blogger friendly PR agencies. I got a call a few weeks ago to attend an “event” with a “client” on an “out of town trip.” Wow! The last press junket I went to was 7 months ago for Nokia. So another trip would be great, especially since it was summer and as well see apparent, the heat is really unbearable.
Mixed reactions to Manila Ocean Park?
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at April 6th, 2008
I’ve only been to three ocean parks in my lifetime – Ocean Park and Sea World in Hong Kong and the Oceanarium in KLCC, Kuala Lumpur. This is thus the fourth ocean park I’ve set foot on in spite memories of the house being a “little ocean park” by itself when I was growing up.

There have been mixed reactions of the public with the soft opening of the Manila Ocean Park: I would actually call this post a biased perspective because I’m a “hobbyist in recession” – put me in a room with fish and I’m happy. We used to keep several tanks of freshwater fish, where my favorite keeps were gouramis, corydoras, loaches, certain types of cichlids and livebearers.

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at March 15th, 2008
Thank you to everyone who came! I’ve basically condensed the formalities over here if you want to know more about what we do – especially concerning our Blog Donor VIP card. Huge congratulations to Anton, Kiven and Jehz for being our pioneer top earners for the first month! Many thanks to Paolo and Red Box for the venue and to our pioneer sponsors – eLBC, Delifrance, and Nokia Philippines.
Last but not the least, huge thanks to Toblerone PH for giving away almost half a kilo of chocolates to everyone. OMG sugarsugarsugarrushhh. I’m still figuring out what to do with mine – maybe melt it and turn it into fondue. Or just eat it straight out. With cookies. While watching Family Guy.

Stalking Butch Dalisay (and his MacBook Air)
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at March 9th, 2008
Barfly on the bar; MacBook Air right below.
Thanks to Noemi and Butch, we were able to grab hold of Palanca award winner Butch Dalisay for an afternoon of coffee and expostulations on creative writing. Talks like these usually have an open ended flow for words and ideas thus by the end of the session we were all having photo opportunities not just with the writer, but with his tablet – the new ultra light MacBook Air.

Dating a Food Blogger, (The Rudiments Of)
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at March 6th, 2008In this I assume that you dear reader are in like with a food blogger. More likely to be female than male, food bloggers are one of the more passionate niche writers whose taste for words are just as delicious as their taste for food.
Dating a food blogger can be a rewarding experience, not just because she can open up an appetizing palette of degustations to your oh so fast food world, but you will be blessed with some of the best conversations ever about life and living it. Some of the most engaging conversations I’ve had were with food bloggers – food is the doorway to all things enjoyable, but only bordering on sinful.

There is a preconceived notion that food bloggers, like beauty or fashion bloggers are a bit on the smug side. This is not true. There is also a preconceived notion that food bloggers will only hazard to the most expensive restaurants in the Metro and away. Also not true. Food bloggers appreciate the best as well as the simplest meals. The common denominator is that they are more sensitive to tastes in context and can compare the best of fast foods to the worsts of fine dining.

Yaya Remy and other stories of interest :)
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at February 11th, 2008Eli, Yapi’s sister has written a short and entertaining piece on Yaya Remy. This was in retroaction to her sister winning RJ Ledesma’s Lies My Yaya Should Have Told Me contest. You can check out Yapi’s blog for the account.
Noemi, together with Blog and Soul has organized a Blogging Ethics and Libel Law forum this coming February 16 2008 at Kape Isla. To date, we have slots for 9 more participants. This project is also in support of Rock Ed Philippines’ Book Bigayan Project. Though it is not required, it would be nice if participants donated a book as an “entrance fee” for this event
Please leave a comment on the B&S blog if you’re interested.
Phoebe Ramos is giving away her back-up make up. Click here for more details on what exactly she’s giving away for adoption. She also started her cooking / food blog.
Does anyone want to go to Hed Kandi on the 16th at Avenue after the Moony Black Concert? VERY limited tickets available. Please leave a comment if you’re interested.
I’ve turned my Flickr Pro account into a photo blog. Some of the shots here were projects done for broadsheets early last year (i.e. Nikki dela Paz and surfer girls) and I finally get to put them online.
It’s Beauty and MInerals Day on February 16th a well. Well, gee, this is beyond my niche but I’m going there in support of and maybe get my eyebags removed once more!
“Stripped down” Hamlet will be showing till the 17th of February. Haven’t read such an entertaining blogosphere buzz about a Shakespeare play, ever. Ana Abad Santos-Bitong should do the same thing with Macbeth. I honestly think Shakespeare remakes are a good direction to make the commentaries of the human condition more up to date with the times. Great stuff!
