Wow what a year. Just being at the cusp of a new year makes me realize how short time is, yet the irony of also realizing how you’ve actually done a lot in the past 365 days. To my friends and family, thank you for everything and may the new year greet us with one big bro-fist!

Hi my name is Jayvee and I’m an alcoholic.

Many months ago I have been struggling with my dependency on alcohol. It was serious. I’d take it in the morning right after waking up. Even after lunch. And after dinner. As you can see, alcohol dependency revolved around a system that’s almost like clockwork.

It has taken a number of interventions from friends to get me off the damn thing once and for all. I admit, at times I do miss the painfully sweet sting once it goes down my mouth but after a while, like all impediments in life, I move on without looking back.

With this epiphany I embrace my newfound self, hopefully a better person. Wiser if not smarter. But more confident to say the least. Where I was once at the precipice looking down into the gaping void of nothingness I have now decided to look up and see the infinite rays of a better tomorrow.

I do my best to try something new every year, even if it’s just a one-off or a thing that eventually turns into a hobby. Well, I’d say this year I found myself in another comfortable position wearing the hat of an events host. The past two weeks had me hosting two gigs for Samsung. They were both selling events for their Samsung Smart TV line done at the Tower Club in Manila and at the Maya Bar in Cebu City. Manila had me in tandem with (the multitalented) Marlon Rivera, designer and director for Ang Babae sa Septic Tank. Marlon helped me demonstrate the Skype calling features present in their 55″ and 60″ models (the 40″ model also has it).

Cebu had me paired up with the charming Lani Osmena and we went through the main features including Search, Apps, and Social TV (access to Facebook and Twitter while watching your shows), and yes, Skype. It was great taking a non-geek approach to technology, something that I’ve always tried to be consistent in with my writing on this blog. I guess the biggest complement I’ve ever received is that the way I speak and the way I write seem to be fairly consistent and I do seem to project similar auras whether I’m writing or speaking. And I think that’s a good thing. Thanks!

I went about both events wearing two hats on “stage” — that of the host and the “demo guy” going through all the pertinent features for 15 minutes, answering questions and chit-chatting with people who had questions in between. It was these in-betweens that were more fun as I got to dialogue with Marlon and Chef Chris of Panizza fame (he provided the food for the night at the Tower Club) in Manila and Lani and some new friends in Cebu.

I’m really happy to have taken the stage for Samsung and even more satisfied that they were able to sell more than a dozen of these next generation TV’s. More than 3 million pesos worth of sales in two nights — congratulations Samsung! =)

Hello children of the 80′s! Did you know that McDonald’s is celebrating its 30th anniversary in the Philippines? I was born 30 years ago so my existence on this planet is clearly defined by exactly how long McDonald’s has been in Manila. In fact there were four branches that served as the pillars of my childhood. These were: the branch in Makati Cinema Square as that was where my family would frequent when my parents would go to Mile Long, the branch in front of AIM because my dad was a graduate of that school, the branch in front of Alabang Town Center because they had the coin operated merry-go-round, and the one that used to be at the corner of President’s Avenue and Sucat but had been recently demolished to pave the way for a grocery store.

Hay, memories!

To commemorate 30 years of the Golden Arches, I’ll be running a NOSTALGIA TRIPPING contest for all my readers. The prizes are gift checks to any McDo branch in the country as well as limited edition Coca Cola can glasses!

Contest Rules

Mechanics
1. Who can join the promo?
• Contest is open to Filipino residents, and must be contactable via a valid e-‐mail address.
• Employees of McDonald’s and promotional and advertising agencies including the relatives up to the second degree are disqualified from joining the promoIon.
• No product purchase required.

2. How to join:
• Find an old photo of yourself, family members, or with friends at McDonald’s – it may be a celebraIon, a birthday party, or simply hanging out at McDonald’s.
• Recreate the photo in today’s setting, and upload it side-‐by-‐side the old photo.
• Share the link to the entry – it may be a blog, TwiTer, Tumblr, photo, youtube, etc. – at the comments secIon.

3. Photo entry requirements:
• Entry must include the following in the caption:
› Location of stores
› Dates when the old and the new photos were taken
› Who are in the photo
› The story behind the photo (what was the occasion, conversaIons that took place, etc.)
• Entries should not contain vulgar and inappropriate material or images, including but not limited to the following:
› Obscene, pornographic, or sexually-‐explicit content or information
› Materials which contain informaIon that poses a risk to the health and safety of others

The Biggest Underwater Photo Exhibit in the Philippines

I’ve been up since last night helping install the biggest underwater photo exhibit in the country thus far. Tomorrow, we’re flying in some of the best underwater photographers in the world — the likes of Michael Aw and Lynn Funkhouser who have both shot for the BBC and National Geographic — to judge the first country-wide underwater photo contest. Hundreds of photos from amateurs and enthusiasts are tremendously mind blowing!

In the morning, there will be seminars on underwater photography by Michael Aw, Steve de Neef, Lynn Funkhouser, and Hideki Iwama. Full schedule here. The awarding will commence at night and the exhibit will be open to all for the entire weekend.

I can’t remember — was it 8 glasses of Grey Goose on Sprite? Basta. As far as I can remember everything was a blur. SMART and HTC were giving out ChaCha and Sensation smartphones like there was a huge surplus and the event was trending worldwide on Twitter for a couple of hours.

That event was epic. SMART announced their exclusive partnership with HTC for carrying all their smart phones. It’s part of their positioning as the Android brand in the Philippines.

You’ve probably seen this already. If not, enjoy 2 minutes of campy 80′s action. From a couple of hundred views to more than 28,000 in 24 hours. Good job. Someone from the Let’s Get Digital FB Group was asking what people thought about this campaign. This was my reply:

To be honest, I’m just glad Pepsi Blue is back. It makes it a lot easier to mix a ‘Toilet Duck’ without having to combine blue curacao, vodka and Sprite / 7UP.

Please bring back Pepsi Twist next?

And, for Coca-Cola, please make it easier for us to find Vanilla Coke. I have to drive all the way to Clark to buy them in cans.

All the viral conversations in the world isn’t anything with a great product.

Just came back from the Kenny Loggins Live in Manila concert. It’s no secret that I’m a big fan. I think I’m the only one in my circle of friends who was excited to find out he was coming to Manila, almost a year in advance. So when Maan scored me tickets, I was more than happy (I would have bought my own of course, but super thanks to my boss at UNO since according to her words — I don’t know anyone else who would want to watch Kenny Loggins!).

I practically grew up listening to his music but the turning point of “casual listener” to “BIG FAN” came when Adel Gabot introduced me to his Outside: From the Redwoods Album and I was completely floored with his rapport and talent on stage. He’s an outstanding musician. Hands down one of the best musicians who can arrange something — and then rearrange it in a fashion where he .. well it’s like keeping it in 4/4 then stumping you for a bit then he goes back to the original meter. Many artists do that today, but he has a way of doing it that’s just uniquely him. And more than 20 years later, he still has it.

Oh and I used to write fan mail. He’d reply.

Kenny Loggins performs ‘What a Fool Believes’ with Michael McDonald from their Redwoods Concert. The venue of this concert was epic: the constructed a stage in the middle of the Redwood Forest.

It was a bit sad though that the bouncers who were hired by the production team drowned the spirits of a lot of the middle aged men and women who came. When Kenny started playing Footloose, a good number of the audience stood up and started dancing. The bouncers immediately got to work and told them to sit down. I mean, WTF — it’s a concert. Kenny Loggins took note of this and said “Hey if you want to dance on your seats that’s fine!” And so this time even more people started dancing. But the bouncers were at it again. What are you afraid of? That the lolos and lolas will start crowd surfing and a moshpit? Oh c’mon.
