Interview with Justin Gary, Creator of the Ascension Deck Building Game
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at November 10th, 2011OK. So here’s another side to my geekiness. Board games.
I’m hooked on Ascension. It’s the staple board game (sorry, Bang!) I play with my regular gaming group next to 7 Wonders. It’s fast, easy to understand, doesn’t require much setup, and you can play with 2-4 guys. A 30 minute game is already long. So I was thrilled at the chance to interview Justin Gary of Gary Games, creator of Ascension. For those who enjoy deck building games like Dominion, Ascension takes direct precedence as a more compact but still epic deck builder. This interview talks about how Ascension was conceived as well as the latest expansion, Storm of Souls.

A Halloween Message

Electro Swing: My current favorite music genre
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 25th, 2011I was a huge fan of the early swing classics, mostly by influence from my dad who made me listen to 100.3 RJ FM in all of my waking days as a child. So when I discovered a random post from an online forum on “Does anyone else know that this is a musical genre” I was hooked. The group was called Caravan Palace (actual song that got me hooked embedded above). The genre was Electro Swing. I did some research and found out that it was a real genre with a huge following. Electro Swing takes the classic swing culture and remixes them with house or R&B. Like so:
So, what do you think?
The Voltron movie that we did not have
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 13th, 2011Absolutely brilliant. Definitely makes the fans want more. Sadly, no this is not an official release but a short film of a live action Voltron directed by Alex Albrecht of Diggnation and Totally Rad Show fame.
Description reads:
When a man regains consciousness in a Voltron battle lion after an “accident” he has to decide does he live a few more minutes or try to tell the world what happened… the end is only the beginning.
If this is a tease for more things to come, I wouldn’t be surprised. Something like this is totally up his alley considering all the stuff he’s done for his web shows with Revision3.

I’m giving away 3 really epic bags from Crumpler. Join my contest!
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 3rd, 2011First off, I’d like to thank Charlie for sponsoring this giveaway to the readers. Crumpler has been really generous — they’re giving away three quality bags courtesy of ABL. I’ve been a long time Crumpler user, owning an assortment of bags and accessories (like this branded Crumpler toilet paper). I can attest to Crumpler’s durability, especially during the rainy season. I once had a 12″ messenger bag from Crumpler for my iBook that survived rainfall and being dropped in the mud. True Story.
Before we go on to the contest rules, let me show you the prizes:

The Symphony of Science (Epic Autotune!)
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at September 9th, 2011
[Note: Turn up the volume for an epic remix!]
Epic auto tune of the quantum theory of the universe. This is actually part of a series called the Symphony of Science, which is a catchy way to deliver scientific concepts in the form of remixes. This particular video is interesting as it includes footage of Morgan Freeman, Michio Kaoku (my personal hero for his work on Parallel Worlds) and Stephen Hawking among many other personas in science.
Happy 65th Birthday Freddie Mercury! Here’s Google’s Tribute!
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at September 5th, 2011To commemorate Freddie Mercury’s 65th birthday, Google released an unlisted YouTube video (it’s not embeddable — you have to know the link exists) of their latest doodle featuring an epic tribute done to the tune of Don’t Stop Me Now.
Enjoy! Here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KX2BQM0D01M
A Tribute to Fabio
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at July 31st, 2011It really seemed like the contest was rigged for Old Spice Guy to pull a fast one over Fabio. Be that as it may, I congratulate Fabio for his amazing sportsmanship in the ‘Mano a Mano en El Bano’ contest. This post is a tribute to Fabio and in fact I was able to pull out an old video which I recorded together with Kate Alvarez back in 2007. The old video host was junked and I do realize that 3 years is a long time for digital and now we have everything on YouTube and Vimeo (funny too since I did mention Megavideo’s claim to fame to be “better than YouTube” — where are they now? HA!). So I have re-uploaded the video for all to see.
In this video Kate and I dissect the Italian male model as a template to romance novel covers. Enjoy me from 2007!
Inn at the Crossroads: My new favorite food blog
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at May 2nd, 2011“This evening they had supped on oxtail soup, summer greens tossed with pecans, grapes, red fennel, and crumbled cheese, hot crab pie, spiced squash, and quails drowned in butter. Lord Janos allowed that he had never eaten half so well.” (II: 91) Photo c/o Inn at the Crossroads
I have a new favorite food blog and it has everything to do with its theme. Inn at the Crossroads is run by two women, Sarian and Chelsea. And like me, they’re huge fans of the Song of Fire and Ice series by George R. R. Martin. If you haven’t heard of this yet, it is hands down an epic series which you must absolutely read before you expire. It’s so good, the first book, A Game of Thrones has been turned into an HBO series.
Sarian and Chelsea usually follow a formula with their posts — making both a Westeros and modern version of their dishes followed by a commentary on each dish — similarities and differences in preparation and plating. Their blog is truly a work of art.
