Archives for b5media

I’ve been receiving relatively more applications for the b5media tech channel from the past few weeks. Generally speaking, the application process is … well, “very general” for the most part. Potential authors always submit blog pitches and areas of specialty that have the words “technology”, “gadgets” and “computers” in the subject line for preferred niches. This is really great, but I’d like to give out some tips on how to make your application process more noticeable and polished. This works for tech, but I think it may also apply for the other channels as well:

Shai Come Home

Posted in Filipino, b5media, blogging on 09/11/2007

Shai Coggins, one of the VP’s of b5media is coming home for the holidays. We are organizing a set of two meets for b5media bloggers as well as for the Filipino blogging community.

The schedule for the two meet ups are as follows:

The first one will be held on the 29th of November (Thursday PM), which is going to be a b5media meet-up. A chance to catch-up and meet some of our wonderful bloggers and Channel Editors who are based in the Philippines.

The second meet-up will be on the 30th of November (Friday PM), which is going to be a general meet-up of Bloggers in Manila. Yes, if you’re a blogger based in Manila (or willing to come and meet us), YOU’RE INVITED to the party.

For more details and updates on the venue, please read Shai’s entry.

I am looking for the following:

VoIP Blogger to take over a VoIP blog that’s set for launch very soon.

SEO / SEM Blogger to take over an existing b5media blog.

iPhone Blogger to take over an existing blog that was recently acquired by b5media.

Also, I have two slots available for blog acquisitions or for starting new concept technology blogs. If you have a pitch or technology blog that you feel can be a part of our network, please send them to www.b5media.com/jobs.

N.B. For interested applicants, please course all applications to the jobs page listed above. I cannot process applications if they were left as comments here. :)

A great part of the reason why I joined b5media in 2005 was to expand my horizons with well known International bloggers. A few days ago, Rick Segal announced the official listing of the b5media advisory board. Among the board members are famous “blogtoonist” Hugh MacLeod, blogging star Robert Scoble, Doc Searls, Stowe Boyd, and Renee Blodgett. I’m not exactly sure what the dynamics of the group will bring forth but according to Stowe, their first board meet seems to be happening at CES.

Jeremy has a post up about why there was a need for a board of advisors.

Wow, more blogging stars! b5media has gone a long way since 2005. :)

Aaron Brazell, our technology manager at b5media confirmed a suspicion I’ve kept to myself. A few weeks ago, Cellphone9.com dropped from a solid Google PageRank 6 to a 5 and then today, a 4. Darren Rowse’s ProBlogger also dropped from a towering 7 to a measly 4. Same goes for Brian Clark’s Copyblogger. Must be disappointing to admit it, but A Bugged Life, though not linked to the network dropped in PR from a 5 to a 4 a few weeks before Google declared jihad on blog networks. Funny though, because as soon as my personal blog’s PR dropped, it made Technorati front page.

At b5media, we are weighing how we want to respond to this. Either we give in to Google and let them dictate what we do and have the unenviable position of losing pagerank and possibly advertising dollars, or we take the stand that quality content is quality content regardless of Google and that our content will speak for itself. We still produce millions of pages of content per month. We still have respect in the community. We still have advertisers recognizing that these sites are valuable assets to leverage to get their campaigns out on. [Technosailor]

It’s been a while since we recorded something. In this podcast for the b5media technology channel, Mike Abundo and I talk about evangelizing the farmers as well as many other things for the Emerging Earth.

Not that I’m preempting a regular b5media tech podcast - I don’t want to promise anything. But I do hope I can keep this up and open the invitation to the other b5media tech channel bloggers.

True Faith belting it out. A glimpse of what’s in store on October 20

Some bloggers are giving away tickets for the Toblerone Thank You Day concert at the Mall of Asia. I recently wrote about how October 20 has been declared National Thank You Day, with Manila being the Thank You capital in the Philippines.

I have 300 tickets to the concert this coming October 20 at the Mall of Asia. Bands include (but are not limited to) Cynthia Alexander, Reggae Mistress, Stone Free, Salindiwa, Mozzie and The Dawn!

To claim your free ticket, all you need to do is leave a comment expressing your desire to come. As an added bonus, Toblerone will be giving a special prize to the commenter who posts the most creative way of saying THANK YOU :)

After you have left a comment, you will be contacted by Alma. If you wish to reach her to claim your tickets ahead of time, you may do so by texting her at 09175344624 or emailing thankyoudayphilippines at gmail dot com. See you there!

Tuesdays with Colbert Low

Posted in Cool, b5media, blogging on 05/09/2007

I had the chance to meet Colbert Low at the Bangsar Shopping Center yesterday. Colbert is a fellow b5media writer who has been one of the cornerstones of the technology channel since 2005. Colbert and I go way back from two years and it is so surreal to have met in person only now. We “met” online through Duncan Riley back in the founding days of b5media.

craigslist_curmudgeon.jpg

My travels around the blogosphere have taken me to the most exotic places - which is where this particular blog comes to light: the past several months has kept me busy with several things b5media. But one such gem is the acquisition of a popular blog known to most writers as the Craigslist Curmudgeon.

There are social phenomena present today that span time and space, and the Internet. One such example is the entity known as the Curmudgeon. The Craigslist Curmudgeon. Having been featured on Yahoo’s picks as well as Miss Snark in the past, the Craigslist Curmudgeon has decided to join b5media to continue the quest of sifting through the lamery around Craigslist, so that your eyes don’t get burned.

The Craigslist Curmudgeon is on a mission to expose the assery, lamery, and confoundery that is often found in Craigslist ads.

The identity of the Curmudgeon is passed on throughout generations of blog managers through a carefully kept code of secrecy.
