We Ask: Can Snoring Break My Marriage?

Written by Jayvee Fernandez

Snoring is a repetitive loud coarse noise created when the air you inhale causes the soft tissue at the back of your throat to vibrate. It happens because of a constricted airway in the nose and mouth. It can be hard to sleep if your spouse that shares the same bed with you suffer from snoring problem. Surveys show that there is a high percentage of divorce happening within marriages where the spouse suffer from snoring problem. Snoring can have a negative impact on the quality of the sleep of your partner.

When your partner is sleep deprived, he/she will start to complain and this will put the marriage into a tense situation. Your partner will eventually resolve to sleep alone after having tried all methods to avoid hearing your snoring such as earplugs. Couples who frequently quarrel tend to have low marriage satisfactions due to the lack of good communication.

If your snoring problem is preventing your partner from having an efficient sleep, you should do something to get it cured. You can try a tongue retaining device which will hold your tongue forward so that it won’t collapse against the pharyngeal wall. It will improve the available three dimensional spaces in the mouth to ensure that the airway is not obstructed.

TRD is ideal for people who have weak tongue muscles that can become very relaxed when asleep. It is also suitable for people who have large tongues, tonsils and uvula. People that suffer from hypothyroidism tend to have big tongues and more fatty tissues in their upper airways so they will find the TRD device suitable. TRD can effectively cure your snoring problem if you are suffering from a mild to moderate sleep apnea problem.

Another type of snoring device commonly used in curing snoring problem is the mandibular advancement device (MAD). MAD is different than TRD in that it requires the dentist to create a mold based on the teeth of the patients. The purpose of the MAD device is to pull the jaw forward so that there are more spaces in the upper airway. When the upper airway is widen, there will be lesser air resistance that causes the snoring sound. MAD can also strengthen the airway muscle so that it becomes more rigid and won’t easily collapse when you are sleeping.

Most doctors will require patients suffering from sleep apnea to test the custom MAD for at least one night before ordering it. MAD device can be used for patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea problem just like the TRD device. There are various types of MAD devices including boil and bite, and adjustable. Boil and bite MAD device can become soft when you put it into a boiling water. While it is soft, you are to wear it in your mouth so that it forms the shape of your gum and fits perfectly in your mouth.

Adjustable MAD devices can be adjusted backward and forward so that you feel comfortable wearing it. Some MAD devices can work with dentures while others don’t. Both the TRD and MAD devices are available at a very affordable price at the local and online store. You can go here to learn more about anti snoring devices.
