Balai Weekend: Koala, Secret Bay and Twin Rocks

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at August 16th, 2010

Dove Koala, Secret Bay and Twin Rocks, once during the day and at night. This was a no-rush dive weekend spent with Wowie, Ilyong, Marie and Chie. Chie got to try out Wowie’s iDive 300 iPod casing and Wowie served as default barista for the two days spent in Balai making the frothiest cappuccino. Great times!

Dive highlights include the school of yellowtails and jacks at Twin Rocks, a black tip shark that only Marie saw, the bubbling ocean floor at Secret Bay and a Spanish Dancer that did not want to dance.

This was also the first time I was able to road test the effects of putting two packs of dessicant into a digital camera casing. Since I don’t have an aluminum case, the heat expedited by the JVC recorder creates a lot of moisture inside the acrylic case. Dessicant, found in all medicine bottles and gadget packaging is really useful for absorbing the moisture.

Probably not the best way to road test the GoPro HD sports camera but still

Me my Shark and I from Chuck Patterson on Vimeo.

Before I invested in my current JVC rig I was seriously considering the GoPro series which some of my friends have. You can attach this thing onto your bike, your surf board or even onto your dive mask and around your head as a strap. This is a rather interesting video showing the Go Pro on a surf board being submerged …. revealing a 9 foot Great White shark circling the surfer.

Oh this made my day!

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at August 12th, 2010

I was looking for free to use music for my Pescador Island video. The sardine run needed background music that fit the furious yet choreographed movements of the fish as they balled up and evaded the threshers. ‘Walls’ by Kogo was it.

Their single is free to download. You can check them out and download the track. If you want it choreographed to my underwater vid, check this out.

Just Arrived: PADI Enriched Air Certification Card

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at August 11th, 2010

Diving with enriched air has its uses. My permanent card arrived over the weekend. Enriched air or ‘Nitrox’ is a mix used for staying at deeper depths longer without suffering decompression penalties. The sweet spot seems to be around 70ft – 90ft deep and is perfect for wrecks and “hanging out” in such places like Monad Shoal.

I am now enriched!

The Anti Camcording Act (RA 10088)

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at August 9th, 2010

I highly doubt any of my readers sneak in cameras to document movies, but if you’re a fan of the flea market DVD bonanza, you’ll know what I mean. It’s no secret that movie piracy is rampant in this country, and there is definitely a blind eye cast upon this. It appears that the fines are slapped on those caught recording inside movie theaters.

Today, it’s now a law. And here are the penalties:

Any person who will be found guilty of violating the provisions of the Anti-Camcording Law shall be subject to a fine of PhP 50,000 to PhP 750, 000 (US$ 1,000 to 17,000) and will face imprisonment of a minimum six months and one day to six years and one day. Individuals who commit the punishable acts for the purpose of sale, rental or other commercial distribution shall suffer the penalty in the maximum. Foreign offenders shall face immediate deportation after payment of the fine and serving his/her sentence, and will permanently be refused entry to the Philippines. Offenders who are employees of or hold a seat in government will perpetually be disqualified from public office, and will forfeit his/her right to vote and participate in public election for five (5) years.

Attached below is the full press release.

Anti Piracy Law

So what do you think? Personally, it’s a small start but a start nonetheless. Are we bound to see anti-piracy laws for bootleg software and file sharing through torrents?

Toshiba’s Libretto W100 sells for PHP 72,990.00

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at August 9th, 2010

Apparently, a Libretto is only produced once every five years. And for 2010, which is also Toshiba’s 25th anniversary as a hardware manufacturer, the Libretto was designed to be a head turner. Sure, the execs did admit that the new W100 isn’t for everyone, but it does strike a sense of elegance into the corporate space.
