WWF Cleanup Dive on July 17: Bring a buddy

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at June 30th, 2010

Are you a DIVER?
Do you have your own GEAR?
Are you free on JULY 17?

If you answered yes to all of these, then get ready to get down and dirty as we clean up a reef in Hamilo Coast, Nasugbu.

One last question – Do you want to bring a friend?

Sure you do!

We’re inviting you and your best dive buddy to come along. E-mail us your name and donor number – don’t forget to include your pal’s name too. Your companion/friend/partner/in-an-it’s-complicated-relationship doesn’t need to be a WWF donor. They are welcome to come aboard through you, but they can’t come if you aren’t!

Send in your e-mails to donorsupport@wwf.org.ph by July 7 and sit tight – we’ll announce who’s in by July 9.

Goodbye, Fran

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at June 30th, 2010

You were one of the first to invite me to all your events. You became a friend. After finding out that we both lived in the same area, plans to meet up and have a beer (on me) would always end up in either one of us being too busy. Life went on. You coming home late from your many endeavors and me juggling trips and other such things. Life is short.

Goodbye, dear friend. You are loved by many.

Beers and much more up there soon.

Presenting the Twilight ECLIPSE Phone from Cherry Mobile

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at June 29th, 2010

Last week I was able to attend the “I’m an Explorer” party to culminate the a trip that was rewarded to three journalists. Using Bing they were able to plot out a travel package from the north to the south of the Philippines which was then rewarded to them by Microsoft. In that party I was able to grab Cherry Mobile’s latest WinMo device, the ECLIPSE.

Read on for first impressions.

Unboxing the Samsung Galaxy S

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at June 24th, 2010

I have a Samsung Galaxy S and these are photos of the unboxing tradition. The phone (you can also call it by its more ho-hum name, the i9000) comes in an elegant “small carbon footprint” black box that will help save the environment. It comes packed with the usual perks: charger, USB cable, manual, and removable battery. No microSD expansion card is included in the box I got, although the device itself has 16GB of internal memory.

Preparing for Malapascua

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at June 19th, 2010

I’ll be going on a much anticipated trip to Malapascua by the end of the week. Threshers,Mantas and Mandarin fish (mating) await! Here’s an email detailing the proposed itinerary for 10 dives. There’s an error in the time between Bogtong Bato and the second Monad Shoal dive on day one as it didn’t take surface interval time into consideration.

Dive itinerary proposed by Evolution
=======================
“On your arrival day I am going to suggest we let you relax a little rather then jumping straight in so how about we start your diving day with an 830am dive at Monad. We like to go there as all the boats have left after the 530am dive and we think there is a spike of activity then. The sharks do spend less time on the stations but we still see them. I took customers there this week and we got shark, Manta and 20 plus Devil Rays so everyone was happy.

Then we can dive again at 11am – perhaps a local dive site like Bogtong Bato for great macro. In the afternoon we can do another macro dive or if the group prefers go back to Monad for more Manta hunting. Then you can do the Mandarin fish dive at 5pm.”

On Day Two I suggest 5am for Monad Shoal, followed by a day trip to the Dona Marylin and Gato Island (apply fuel surcharge of 350/person). I really think they are worth doing. Then we can do a night dive at Bantigue Bay at 630 and get back in time for beer and food!

On your last day I think its 5am Thresher dive again and a 930 dive on one of our local Macro sites – Lapus Lapus or Gilleano.

DAY ONE
830 Monad Shoal
1100 Bogtong Bato
1200 Monad Shoal
1730 Lighthouse (Mandarin Dive)

DAY TWO
0500 Monad Shoal
0900 Day Trip Dona Marylin / Gato (+350/person fuel surcharge)
1830 Night Dive Bantigue Bay

DAY THREE
0500 Monad Shoal
0930 Gileano or Lapus Lapus

On an ending note, I’d really love to level up my conversation with the video lens into what these guys are doing with their commentary:

A song for you because today is Friday

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at June 18th, 2010

Play this song. If you have earphones on, better. If you have external speakers with bass, much better. Play it from your iPod while walking down the street, surrounded by people who are walking in different directions. Look around. You’ll catch yourself smiling.

This is Living / Breathing by Mesita.

Audible Beta for Android

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at June 17th, 2010

Kudos to Audible (@audible_com) for rolling out a standalone app for the Android platform. I’ve been a subscriber to Audible for the past 2 years and the experience on the iPod and iPod touch has left me complacent — after installing the public beta version. I used to think that “just listening” was a great experience, but the current build has an easy to use bookmarking feature, the ability to download new books from your library, and a bit of eye candy with the visualizer mode.

Previously with the iPhone, downloading audiobooks required a desktop sync with iTunes. On Android, you can do in-app downloads. With the visualizer mode, you’re basically listening to audio with a screensaver background. This mode activates touch sensitive features allowing to you drag across the screen to rewind and fast forward.

Right now the app suffers from Fragmentation issues as there are so many version of Android installed on many other phone brands so the experiences vary, unlike that of the iPhone. If you’re an Audible subscriber and have an Android-based phone (my copy is running on a Sony Ericsson X10), join the Google Group.

The Day Trip: Anilao

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at June 17th, 2010

A new mix of dive buddies which may turn into something more regular, with more people! Ramon de Veyra asked me if I wanted to go on a day trip dive with Quark, Neva and her family. This video is the result. It’s really the ‘Ramon de Veyra Underwater Show.’

Below is raw footage of the octopus doing it’s camouflage thing — color and texture changing right before your very eyes. I’ve never gotten this kind of up close and personal footage. The cephalopod seemed to stand its ground and displayed the warning signs of it being threatened. I had the LED light turned off so as not to intimidate it further. I guess that was a good thing because it stayed.

P.S. Aquaventure Dive Resort now has free WiFi. No passwords!

Happy 100th, Jacques Cousteau!

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at June 11th, 2010

“Buoyed by water, he can fly in any direction – up, down, sideways – by merely flipping his hand. Underwater man becomes an archangel.” — Jacques Yves-Costeau

To the guy who made it all possible, happy 100th anniversary!

Google and The World Cup

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at June 10th, 2010

Football is the only sport I really played when I was younger. Google has made it easier for fans by putting this up whenever you search for “World Cup.” Good job!
