Rocked Radio relaunches blog for something more engaging
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at July 30th, 2009More and more organizations are using blogs to get their message across. Recently, Rocked Radio revamped their site (ultra amazing designer Cynthia Arre and I did the back end) moving it from Blogspot to a self hosted WordPress account. The push was made when Gang Badoy and co. moved stations from NU 107 to their new home with Jam 88.3. They’re in for a longer time slot too — three hours of interesting talk from 9 PM to 12 midnight every Wednesday.
To supplement the show, the site has branched out into something like an online magazine with regular columns from luminaries in local literature and art — Alexis Tioseco, Yvette Tan, Luis Katigbak, Erwin Romulo, Arnold and Cynthia Arre, Kidlat de Guia, Earnest Mangulabnan-Zabala, Ricky Torre, and Nico Puertollano.
Rocked Radio has a unique appeal, bringing forth the clout of mainstream radio broadcasting with the conversation on the Internet. And really, the content is like no other:
This is our classroom. Your alternative social studies class on FM. Usapang ugali, musika, sining at sibika. Rock Ed Radio is a project of Rock Ed Philippines. Music powered by Terno Recordings. Forums moderated by Lourd de Veyra (Radioactive Sago Project’s frontman) and Gang Badoy (Founder of Rock Ed Philippines). Our main objective is to promote inquiry and informed discussion. Magtanong naman tayo.
Bookmark and subscribe to the revamped Rocked Radio, easily one of the newest influential blogs to grace our local Internet. Or text 0920-214-7922 for comments and questions which will be read on air!
Dispatches: UNO, Bloggers, Fully Booked — July 29 at 7PM BHS
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at July 23rd, 2009On page twelve of the magazine, there is a short manifesto tha describes the heart of the publication I work for. Let me write it down for you.
UNO is a monthly magazine for the discerning man (and woman). There are features on women we admire, occurrences worth covering, art forms we appreciate, objects that inspire acquisitiveness, and ideas that deserve attention, among other things.
There are also jokes, which may or may not always be in good taste. We value writing and images that are extraordinary. We love women. It is our belife that digital tools should be used to emphasize natural beauty and/or enhance a specific aesthetic– not for turning people into wax models.
Again, we love women.
We think that there’s more to men (and women) than their surfaces.
UNO: Dispatches for the Discerning Man
As serendipitous as it may be, I find myself knee deep into something that I truly love doing, becoming a cyborg of sorts combining the very best talent in local glossy with the journey of the Internet. It is no secret that the blogosphere has been more than interesting for us as a community mechanism, which is why we want to push that even further. Starting with this:
So here’s the deal. Let’s take a break from the usual clubbing routine for something different. On July 29 at 7:00PM we’re holding an informal meet up with our blogger friends and contributors at the Fully Booked FORUM (4th floor!) at Bonifacio High Street. What’s going to happen? Well we’re going to bare all and answer all the questions you may have and perhaps have you going home with a little bit more knowledge about the publishing industry, marketing print, and how print transitions to the Internet locally. We’ll talk about why we revamped UNO, how exactly we did it, and the new design philosophy behind the new and improved magazine. Let’s talk paper stock. Cover shoots. Refocus on our events. Our blog and the community behind it. [read more here]
Hey, we really want you to come. And Arnold Arre will be there too with his brand new baby titled Chapter One.
See you!
Cindy Kurleto: Two Versions of UNO July ’09
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at July 16th, 2009I guess one of the conveniences of the web is being able to post our cover girls sans the cover lines. So here are two versions of the cover — Cindy Kurleto on both of course — for UNO’s July ’09 issue. Also in this issue are Ellen Adarna and Gretchen Fullido. And a little something from Norman Black. The other version of the cover after the jump.
Toshiba NB200 Photo Review: SRP P29,000
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at July 15th, 2009OK, enough of basketball and we’re now back to the geekiness. Today, Juno showed off the new NB200 which is Toshiba’s take on the netbook. Although a bit late in the game compared to other brands the NB200 is showered with praise. Three USB ports (one of which is a charging port), external VGA out, removable battery, webcam, and really big letters on the keypad make this mini lovely.
More photos after the jump.
More detailed updates on Kobe Bryant’s Manila Tour
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at July 15th, 2009
Hi guys, I have new updates from Nike Philippines. I’m not really a basketball fan but as promised, I’d post this for my readers who are interested in Kobe updates from the last time. This press release details his complete one day tour in Manila. Read on for more. I’ve highlighted salient parts of the release.
July 13, 2009 (Manila) – Making his promised return trip to Manila, NBA Finals MVP Kobe Bryant will kick off his Nike sponsored 2009 Asia Tour: Philippines on July 21, 2009. Seeking to inspire young ballers to continue aspiring for their big hoop dreams, the tour will touch six cities in Asia – Manila, Singapore, Taipei, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Chengdu.
“Nike Philippines is proud to welcome Kobe Bryant back to Manila, and we are excited to be the first stop of his Asia tour. Since his last visit, Kobe has further cemented his status as a basketball powerhouse having been awarded NBA’s 2007-2008 MVP. The Lakers’ clinching the NBA Championship and Kobe being named the Finals’ Most Valuable Player in the recently concluded season makes the timing of his visit doubly exciting, and though brief, we know he will again touch many young lives, inspiring them to reach for their hoop dreams,” said Nike Philippines country marketing manager Mae Dichupa.
Kobe Bryant’s one-day Manila visit will kick off with a visit at Nike Park, The Fort at 2:00pm, where he will meet young ballers from select Gawad Kalinga communities. Kobe has made it a point to support deserving institutions in every tour, setting aside quality time to be with children who are interested in basketball to encourage them to keep dreaming big. Activities at the Nike Park, The Fort will be broadcast live over W.N.I.K.E Radio on 89.9 DWTM.
The main event of the basketball superstar’s Manila visit will be a basketball camp at the ULTRA where Kobe will showcase his skills and share his basketball prowess alongside the Nike Elite Campers, a group of up-and-coming young basketball players. The camp will allow Kobe to work with his young fans to help them increase their level of play on the basketball court. The show will start at 4:00pm, gates will be open to the public at 3:00pm.
Additionally, during the tour, Nike and Kobe Bryant will introduce the new Dream Season shoe, a first of its kind basketball shoe designed for outdoor games. The Nike Dream Season, designed with insights from Kobe, helps share his passion for basketball with players throughout Asia Pacific and gives them the opportunity to live out their dreams on the outdoor court.
The Nike Dream Season, both lightweight and durable, is sleek and aggressive much like Kobe’s style of play. In the recently concluded league, Kobe Bryant lived out his dream season. With Nike Dream Season and Kobe’s 2009 Asia Tour, he hopes to continue inspiring young ballers to realize their own dream seasons.
Tickets to see Kobe live at ULTRA will be distributed for one day only: Saturday, July 18, 2009, beginning at 12 noon at Nike Park, The Fort. Tickets are free of charge and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Only two tickets will be given per person, with a total of 3,000 tickets distributed.
W.N.I.K.E Radio, which airs on 89.9 DWTM every Monday from 10-10:30 am, will also award tickets to lucky listeners for this rare opportunity to see Kobe Bryant live.

Hands on with the HTC Magic exclusively from SMART
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at July 7th, 2009Because Rico shot this phone while we were dining at Soms tonight, I promised to have my short feature of the HTC Magic up before the morrow so that he could link back to my “scoop.” Before anything else, let me list the pricing scheme of the device which is available exclusively through SMART. The unit alone is quite expensive for a device that uses the Android platform at 39,900.00 (shouldn’t open source not have heavy licensing fees?).
With a plan, the costs will look like this:
