Original Super Smash Brothers Brawl on modded Wii?

Super Smash Brothers Wii

If you own a modded Wii, you will not be able to play the original retail of Super Smash Brothers Brawl (SSBB). Ironic as it is, buying original copies of Mario Galaxy and SSBB and running these on a modded unit will bring a disk read failure. This is Nintendo’s way of combatting disk backups which is the main proponent for piracy, especially here in the Philippines.

If you own a modded Wii and have bought a copy of SSBB from Datablitz or any gaming shop in the Philippines there are several ways around this. You can either remove your modchip or corrupt the firmware. But there is also a best of both worlds compromise that is recommended, allowing you to play burned / backup disks as well as original games. This is how it is done:

The process entails installing an on and off switch for your modchip. The installation costs P500.00 and you can do this in stores at V Mall, Greenhills (EYO is the most trusted). They will first determine if your modchip (Wiikey being the most popular in the Philippines) is actually a real bona fide chip. If so, they will have to flash this as well which will cost you another P500.00. All in all, you will need to spend for a discounted P850.00.

To activate, the switch needs to be turned off to run original games and turned on to activate the mod. Resetting the Wii entails turning the LED red (not yellow) to be able to switch modes. This is done by pressing and holding the power button for several seconds until the light changes to red.

My personal recommendation: if you can afford to remove the modchip yourself, then go ahead. SSBB is the real reason why I bought a Wii in the first place (imagine the one year wait!). The Pinoy-N forums are talking about how SSBB has helped “combat piracy” with players removing their modchips just to play this game – I assure you, it’s worth it!

Any SSB fan will be able to get into the game immediately. Apart from the noticeable speed decrease in movement (a good thing!), the game feels exactly like its predecessor with more surprises! What makes SSBB more engaging is the online battle mode, allowing you, strangers and friends to brawl online.

I tried to have my Wii installed with such a switch, but the people over at Greenhills (EYO, and E-Stop) said that my unit does not need a switch because my modchip (D2C) will run SSBB with no problems.

Now all I have to do is find a copy of the game. It’s sold out in all of the stores I went to.

thanks. so running SSBB with an old wiikey firmware will not brick my wii. it will just not run. right?

uhm i hav a question.

by installing an on/off switch for the mod,

does this mean i can use the wii wifi functions as long as the mod is in off mode?

will smash bros work on my modded wii it has a d2p pro modchip (i think). if it wont work it wont brick the wii right?

OHJEEZ.

I’ve been stressing over my Wii for months now. I’ve been avoiding getting it modified for so long and then I finally did… But sadly the two games I wanted to play the most (SSBB and Mario Kart) were games that would brick the console. I only found out after I already got it modifed.

And this is just what I was looking for!

…I’m going to try and open the Wii up and find out what kind of chip it has inside. I hope I don’t break it.

Thanks for the info!!

Hi – i noticed eversince our WII got converted, it won’t play the original games. Is it possible that the chip is preventing the reading of the original disc? Will the switch enable us to play the original games again?

Thanks Jayvee. So i suppose i need to bring my WII unit back to EYO for the switch? Is my understanding correct that in the meantime, i should not play super mario kart or any of the new games as it will brick my wii? When it brick the console, what are my options?

thanks for this post! I still have the original unmodded wii (US version) and I’m thinking of modding it with the wiikey with the switch as you suggested.

i have a few questions though:

1) will my wii-fit and wii sports (both original) still work? I understand that you’ll only have to turn the wiikey switch off in order to play the original games.

2) will online games (mario kart) work? won’t nintendo detect the wii key?

3) what about wii updates? can i still update the wii even with the wiikey installed?

thanks man. will contact you via email if the comments section isn’t the proper avenue for this discussion.

looking forward to your reply

what wii do you have? mine is a korean wii. I bought it at gamestop greenhills. I’m planning to buy ssbb game but the saleslady told me that I can’t play it because my wii is modded. If I turn off the switch of the mod chip, is it still in english menu?

Oohh…this confirms the recommendation of 2 relatives to go to EYO Sales. We just got Rock Band 2 and the game won’t connect because the console is modded. This is a great idea. Thank you! 😀
