Super Smash Brothers Wii

If you own a modded Wii, you will not be able to play the original retail of Super Smash Brothers Brawl (SSBB). Ironic as it is, buying original copies of Mario Galaxy and SSBB and running these on a modded unit will bring a disk read failure. This is Nintendo’s way of combatting disk backups which is the main proponent for piracy, especially here in the Philippines.

If you own a modded Wii and have bought a copy of SSBB from Datablitz or any gaming shop in the Philippines there are several ways around this. You can either remove your modchip or corrupt the firmware. But there is also a best of both worlds compromise that is recommended, allowing you to play burned / backup disks as well as original games. This is how it is done:

The process entails installing an on and off switch for your modchip. The installation costs P500.00 and you can do this in stores at V Mall, Greenhills (EYO is the most trusted). They will first determine if your modchip (Wiikey being the most popular in the Philippines) is actually a real bona fide chip. If so, they will have to flash this as well which will cost you another P500.00. All in all, you will need to spend for a discounted P850.00.

To activate, the switch needs to be turned off to run original games and turned on to activate the mod. Resetting the Wii entails turning the LED red (not yellow) to be able to switch modes. This is done by pressing and holding the power button for several seconds until the light changes to red.

My personal recommendation: if you can afford to remove the modchip yourself, then go ahead. SSBB is the real reason why I bought a Wii in the first place (imagine the one year wait!). The Pinoy-N forums are talking about how SSBB has helped “combat piracy” with players removing their modchips just to play this game - I assure you, it’s worth it!

Any SSB fan will be able to get into the game immediately. Apart from the noticeable speed decrease in movement (a good thing!), the game feels exactly like its predecessor with more surprises! What makes SSBB more engaging is the online battle mode, allowing you, strangers and friends to brawl online.

  1. I tried to have my Wii installed with such a switch, but the people over at Greenhills (EYO, and E-Stop) said that my unit does not need a switch because my modchip (D2C) will run SSBB with no problems.

Now all I have to do is find a copy of the game. It’s sold out in all of the stores I went to.
