Lets just say they have a shampoo, that has anti-dundruff, conditioner, hot-oil, for dry, normal, oily hair rolled into one; and yet it does not work that way. eah shampoo has a different formula that reacts favorably to a certain type of hair. but i digress, releasing different versions of office simply means they're giving the end-users the flexibility of choosing what is appropriate for their use. after all, not everyone is as good with computers as you might think. one version's interface might be a welcome sight to the others and yet look boring to hard core office suite users. hence the solution of different product ranges. another analogy is like releasing 4 different types of XBOX's for the grand finale, i think open office is weak (for the moment), its not as robust as MS office (although im all for open source, i just love feisty fawn and the next version after that). and plese do take note the OS that the MAC is running on,its a different platform (much different really) from Microsoft Windows.
