Fiddling with G.ho.st — now your OS is online!

G.ho.st UI

If you own an ASUS eee, or even if you don’t — you may want to check out G.ho.st, a full web based operating system. Truth be told, this is the direction office tools are going with the prevalence of wireless connectivity all over the place. Well, take away the fact that the whole thing is accessible via a web browser and you’re left with an OS that slightly resembles the Windows Vista UI. But that’s not the point. Exciting development – we have a free operating system that can be accessed from any computer with Internet. There are some weird concepts too like a G.ho.st web Browser — why run a browser within another browser? But those are minor quandaries best reserved for another time.

Still, the Operating System is still in its Alpha stage but this is definitely a breakthrough as there is a proof of concept that a fully functioning operating system can be developed for online use FOR FREE. If you own an ASUS eee, this may be a great solution to your storage problems as the OS gives you 3GB worth of hard disk space. In the future, this OS can be a model for schools and other institutions that do not have a budget to purchase hundreds of licenses for Windows.

Oh wait, I just described Linux.

As much as I like on-line applications and Ireally think they are great. It will still be good to have an application installed in your computer. And this is because the Internet is still a gossamer thread that miracuolously holds up a brick or in certain instances several bricks.

But then again that is why there is Linux.

I agree with Juned. Nothing beats the feeling of having something installed in a brick in front of you. It’s there, and it’s more physical than the internet will ever be, and I’m infinitely afraid of not being able to access the internet to get to my junk.

I really find the concept of an OS in the Internet hilarious. It is just another layer that does not add any value. Why should we pass through this “online OS” just to get to the application we want. The infrastructure that powers the Internet is already an OS.

A long time ago, God created mainframe and all applications run on this mainframe and dumb terminals access it, and everyone was happy. As the humans demand more, the mainframe became a chokepoint. Then God created client-server and moved some processing in the terminals. For a while, everyone was happy until the humans wanted their application to be available anywhere, anytime. Then God moved all applications and processing back to central servers and created the dumb browser so humans can access them. I think I’m having deja vu 🙂
