Destination Cebu: Sinulog 2007

I will be in the proud land of Cebu this coming January 19 – 21 2007 with friends to shoot the annual Sinulog Festival. This will be my first time to attend this event – but not my first time in Cebu.

The days where I will be there are those days where the processions and more street parties are held. You can check the schedule here.

The Sinulog festival is one of the grandest and most colorful festivals in the Philippines. The main festival is held each year on the third Sunday of January in Cebu City to honor the Santo Niño, or the child Jesus, who used to be the patron saint of the whole province of Cebu (since in the Catholic faith Jesus is not a saint, but God). It is essentially a dance ritual which remembers the Filipino people’s pagan past and their acceptance of Christianity. – WikiPedia

I’d appreciate help from bloggers on neat places to go to, since I will only be there for a very short time. I guess most of the time will be spent shooting the parade and the celebration.

i have fond memories of cebu kasi i grew up there. saya naman, u get to see the sinulog festival (it’s been a looooooong time for me).

some places to check out:
– plantation bay (a resort; around P1000 to spend the day there)
– maribago bluewaters (P350 to stay there; P150 for a buffet lunch, i think). but right across it, there’s a stall where a lady sells hand-made shell jewelry. worth checking out, esp since they’re pretty and cheap 🙂
– shangri-la mactan resort (wow, ganda)
– at the rotunda (city), look around and there are full body massages done for P50
– if you’re willling to try, order cebu’s dimsum steamed rice (i used to call it dinghao. my absolute childhood fave dish). P21 the last time i was there, but we used to order it for P9 only (that was during 80’s)

hi there! was in cebu last month…dont leave cebu without trying sutukil (a variety of seafoods cooked in vinegar and spices = something like a kinilaw), there’s a resto along maxilom ave. few blocks from robinson’s cebu (fuente osmena circle). don’t forget CnT (for orig lechon cebu), it’s everywhere but their main resto is in Guadalupe. if you’re cowboy enough, there’s also the ‘bbq avenue’ – also somewhere in fuente osmena. you’ll find all kinds of bbq and the famous ‘puso’ rice 🙂

also, go to TOPS, Cebu’s highest peak it’s in Lahug i think (just ask the locals hehe)…so wonderful at night, loved the city lights. great for photo opps 🙂 bring your jacket though, it’s chilly up there.

don’t forget to visit the beaches if you like diving/snorkeling, like sumilon and malapascua.

i suggest don’t go eating at mango brutus (a huge chain of cebuano fastfood), i find their foods bland (and too dry) — or maybe it’s just me 🙂

happy trip!

uy chie, long time no hear! thanks for the tips. will go over them and list them all down! hehe! were staying in a place near ayala center cebu so we will most likely walk around that area. tyty

Wish I could also see the Sinulog festival again. The first and last time I saw it, I was just 12 yrs old. Oh well, have fun at the festival!

i’m supposed to come there around this time to cover an event, u know, the one that was cancelled last month due to typhoon ‘daw’ hehe i was planning to extend my trip until the festival, but unfortunately they didn’t send me due to conflict of sked, bummer.

have a nice trip ulit!

it’s been awhile since I’ve last gone to Cebu and enjoyed the festivities. I think the last time was during our wedding engagement in 1985.. Dad was one of the first organizers of the First sinulog in the 80’s and Sinulog reminds me so much of him.

C Yah in Cebu Sinulog Festival…Viva Pit Señor!!!!……..I’ll be There in Cebu This 20 Sat……Just 2 Watch The Sinulog Festival And also The pretty girls of Cebu….lol…….Viva Pit Señor!!!!!…..Meljun,1987….Melbourne, Australia……..Mabuhay!

Hey… you’ll finally set foot here! advise lang, wear really durable shoes.. most of the time you’d end up walking due to road closures and parade blockades.. i swear to God. 🙂

experience the parade at Abellana Sports Complex, Rotunda, Mango Square.

…the parties in Crossroads, Banilad Town Center and Grand Convention.

no one will be in Mactan during the festival so stay sa city jv 🙂

you WILL have a blast.

Hi! We were in Cebu last year for the sinulog festival also and we had a great time! Just be prepared with sunblock and water. 🙂 By the way, someone tried to leave a comment on this blog about Bantayan Island but for some reason, it didn’t appear. He sent you an email about it also…were you able to get it? We just don’t know what’s causing it kasi…
