Philippine eCommerce: First Paypal, then eBay and now Google Philippines

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 17th, 2006

I had previously written about Paypal being announced in the Philippines a few days ago. And then several hours later, I was able to sign up for an eBay PH seminar with Jim Griffith of eBay University.

And then, I was reading Marc’s blog, where he writes about Google opening shop in the Philippines, specifically looking for a Filipino AdSense dude and other posted job openings. Here’s your chance to work for Google!!

From the looks of the job opening, it may seem that they’re looking for a product coordinator slash call center background to deal with different AdSense clients all around the world, and then localize some of the content for the Philippines.

They say good things come in three’s, so I’m not surprised with the dawning of this neopolitan delight.

Crocs shoes in the Philippines: the gender debate

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 16th, 2006

Today I decided to buy myself an advanced birthday gift (November 3 for those of you who feel generous!). I have been eyeing a pair of Crocs for the past three weeks. With eyeing came the resistance to buy, mainly because of the slightly hefty price tag of about P1,700.00 to P2,900.00.

I finally bought a pair today after checking out their latest Islander design, a “return to topsiders” look of blue and beige (other two tone colors available). So, what do you think? It’s back to topsiders with a new, modern look.

Now here’s the thing. In the three weeks that I’ve contemplated on getting a pair, I’ve received many reactions from the male and female populance about these footwear. In general, the girls hate them. The guys just love ‘em.

Female arguments against Crocs

  • They are unflattering
  • They are too expensive (okay, and do you hear us say things about your Havaianas??!)
  • They are too big
  • The holes make the shoes look a bit dorky
  • Male arguments for Crocs

  • They are very very comfortable, like your entire foot is being massaged
  • The holes make the shoes look so cool
  • You can wet them and they will still be okay
  • C’mon, we’re actually raving about shoes. Can’t you let us be for once?
  • Here’s my final argument why most men want a pair. Unlike women that can get away with wearing slippers to work, men cannot. Crocs are the closest thing to ultra comfortable footwear without having to look like slippers or sandals. Get it? Okay, everyone happy!

Ronnie Quizon: My second concert shoot

I was lucky enough to catch a few bands on stage for the second day of Mobile Pilipinas 2006. Here are some shots I took of Ronnie Quizon, being the most animated on the microphone at “100% rockstar” character. Most of these are from Makatha with Ronnie Quizon’s animated appearance on the microphone.

After the concert, I printed the photo above and gave it to him. I forgot to sign it. Damn. Great event though, thanks to the wonderful bands and organizers! Day three is tomorrow so if you have time on a lazy Sunday, do drop by at the Alabang Town Center!

I haven’t photoshopped these images though. Pardon me if the huge image looks slightly grainy. This was my second concert shoot. My first one was with Sitti during the BURN Magazine soft launch.

PayPal is now in the Philippines … sort of!

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 12th, 2006

The moment we have been waiting for is finally here!

Albeit in a lite version. I guess when they said “Paypal, they really just stressed the “pay” part. Apparently you can only send money but not request. Nonetheless, this is a step in the right direction to our eCommerce.

Prices of Moleskine in the Philippines

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 12th, 2006

Before the personal digital assistant, there was the notebook and the organizer. But there also emerged the moleskine, which was dubbed as the writing enthusiast’s journal. It’s sorta like the Macintosh of the journal universe. Haha!

In any case, a lot of aspiring, feeling, and would be writers have been searching far and wide for moleskines available in the Philippines. Here is the pricelist which you can grab from Moleskine Philippines. With Christmas up and coming, you may want to order some for gifts! Have fun!

    Sorsi’s blogging adventure begins!

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 10th, 2006

One of the nicest things about blogging is that it is, just like art, never a finished product. As an advocate of continous improvement, we left BlogCon 2006 with a case study for the migration of Sorsi Soriano’s blog from Friendster to WordPress. Correct me if I’m wrong but Friendster does not archive posts.

    sorsiblog.jpg

I’ve been a fan of Sorsi’s “kwento style” blogging which not a lot of people have the knack for. If I were to give a reward to the best journal style of blogging, that award would go to Pam Pastor for her uber long posts and uber camwhoring skills. Sorsi’s style of blogging is similar to this, for she engages readers with her everyday “matter of fact” content.

This is what I call the “Seinfeld Phenomenon” (coined after the famous TV sitcom Seinfeld) where Jerry Seinfeld, as himself, finds humor in everyday things.

If you were to meet five bloggers …

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 9th, 2006

Who would they be? Darren has posted this question up on ProBlogger and this is a repost of the comment I’ve left. Since i have to limit this list to five, im not going to include the b5 founders because that would be a given already. I’d love to meet the following:

BRIAN CLARK – I come to Copy Blogger daily to read up on the writing profession. it’s not just his advice, but the WAY he conveys his message. I want to see what he’s like in person.

JOHN C. DVORAK – they say that the cranky geek isn’t as cranky in person. i just want to see for myself. in fact i’d feel disappointed if he didnt tell me to scram!

PETER ROJAS – Pencil pusher? Writer? Editor? I want to see what makes this guy tick.

EASTON ELLSWORTHKnow More Media’s Associate Editor is young and talented. I’d love to have a beer with the guy and hear his thoughts about life, the birds, the bees and blogging.

HUGH MCLEOD – is he a copywriter? a cartoonist? a creative director? this guy is a legend in my books and i want him draw a comic behind my business card that says, “Jayvee, your tail is sooooo long.” (wait, that sounded wrong!)

b5media’s $2M: Blogging has bought me a whole new world

Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 8th, 2006

Though I cannot quantify the quality of my one year stay with my cobloggers at b5media, the financial institutions have pegged it at $2 million USD. Of course, this invested money was meant to grow the business into something we vaguely describe to be totally awesome in the coming months.

Of course if it one thing we aren’t, we aren’t a dollar bill. We can’t please everyone and this is the reality of such things. We’ve been getting a lot of flack from 9rules as well as from Valleywag. But again, this is the blogosphere, and flack like this is expected.

On a personal level, our internal forums have been packed with replies after Jeremy announced his $2M birthday present. People have also asked me if this means that I’ll go full time pro. Well, the answer to that is still to be determined, but I assure you that going full time into problogging will have me consider more than just a capital infusion. A lot of it has to do with the learning experiences behind my job. So if going full time into this will help me grow professionally, then why not?

b5media has a lot of potential because of the people behind it. I would like to guess that the infusion will be used to grow and retain talent and find other creative means and ways of developing REACH. Of course, I could be wrong here but this seems like the logical step.

But enough of that now. It’s the weekend, and we’re still trying to overload our internal forums with rave spam. Hehe.

UPDATE: Aaron Brazell, our new Technology Manager has posted the roundup of the $2M buzz in his blog.
