ituloy angsulong is the next SEO Philippines II keyword
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 30th, 2006I don’t recall much of what happened after Beercon 2006. I could describe the night to be a waxy blur accentuated by shots of tequila and overflowing tenderloin tips sauteed with garlic. Some of the things I do remember:
Pimp your admin with WP Admin Tiger
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 30th, 2006
I just installed Steve Smith’s WP Admin Tiger plugin that overhauls the admin page of your wp-admin backend. You can download it from his blog.
There are some problems on Firefox 2.0 using the Mac but otherwise, if you’re bored with the old admin layout, it might be well worth the small effort to install.
If you decide to install it, check out this post by Paul which shows you how to eliminate unwanted screen real estate:
Login to your server and head over to the wp-content/plugins/wp-admin-tiger/wp-admin-tiger_files/ directory. Open up tiger.css in your favorite text editor and search for #footer. For me, this is line 146. Add the following property to that CSS selector and save the file: display:none;. Clear your browser’s cache and load up your WordPress admin panel. You should now have a great deal of extra space where the footer was.
What this does is remove the WordPress footnote located at the bottom part of the admin page that thoroughly reduces screen real estate by almost an inch-wide. Annoying!
The full post on how to do this is here.
List of Firefox 2.0 Compatible Plugins and Themes
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 28th, 2006After a horrendous experience with a Firefox 2.0 upgrade on Windows I decided to link everyone to a listing of Firefox 2.0 compatible extensions and themes.
I installed Firefox 2.0 this morning and all of a sudden my bookmarks were not showing up on the tab area (but they were still on the bookmarks folder), pages were not refreshing, and tabs were not working.
It turns out that after disabling all my plugins and reinstalling everything from scratch, the problem was twofold:
Program Files --> Mozilla Firefox and start with a clean install.PC Magazine is the #1 Tech Mag in the Philippines
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 28th, 2006Hinge-Inquirer Publications has just posted a press release on the recent Synovate Consumer Survey for the months of June to August 2006.
Here is a snippet of the PR:
According to the Synovate survey PC Magazine Philippines reaches 157,703 readers, making it number one in the technology category. Following closely in second place is the three-issue-old Game! Magazine, the Philippines’ first online gaming magazine, with 148,873 readers. Both titles are published by Hinge Inquirer Publications (HIP), an Inquirer Group company.
The local version of PC Magazine is the recognized bible and reference publication of the computer industry here and abroad. PC Magazine Philippines incorporates the latest and most locally relevant material from its foreign counterparts, but also focuses on subject matter made by and for the Filipino PC aficionado, a combination appreciated by its readers, according to the Synovate results. Game!, on the other hand, focuses on the fastest-growing tech lifestyle category today – online gaming, particularly on locally available games. (source)
Okay, just to disclose, I have been a contributor for PC Magazine Philippines and I also do miscellaneous editorial work for GAME! Magazine. It is rewarding to belong to a technology editorial team where all three titles made it to the TOP 10.
I mentioned three magazines right? What’s the third, then? Well, Mobile Philippines of course, that ranked number 10 in the top tech magazines for the said period of June – August 2006. This is also considering that this was the time when the magazine had undergone a transition in title from “MPH” to “Mobile Philippines.”
Now how about that …

A lot of people have been asking what exactly is SEO? To which I will have to answer … No one knows the true secrets behind SEO. It is just like MI:6 and Area 51. If people were able to open up the Pandora’s Box of SEO, then all hell will break lose. That is why SEO II goes in tandem with the Beercon Oktoberfest celebration: what happens in SEOPH II stays in SEOPH II!. In the morning, people will be too stoned to have remembered what happened the previous night.
Personally, it’s another excuse for me to meet up with friends and talk about geeky things and chismis.
Winthrop of PC Magazine Philippines will be there to cover the event too.
Dove’s Campaign for Real Beauty
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 25th, 2006Dove has launched the second Campaign for Real Beauty in the Philippine Islands using a website which is located at campaignforrealbeauty.ph. Last year’s campaign (the one with the billboards that you could text to vote) won an international acclaim thanks to the Ogilvy PR Agency. Yay for Ogilvy PH!
Fast Fact: Only 5% of Filipina women consider themselves to be beautiful. The 95% don’t. Reasons usually have to do with social taboos, media, and emotional childhood scars.
What I especially found interesting was that you could grab Real Beauty badges and post them on your website using the site generated code. What I also found interesting was that ladies could submit inspiring stories about how they overcame “aesthetic hurdles” to become who they are now. Personal friends are in it too – Pam Pastor from Inquirer and Mia Sebastian (see pic!) from my college.
I wonder if a similar campaign were launched, but for men. Of course, that would be really gay, but then I realize that something like that will never happen since women really go for men because they are nice and gentleman-like … Not about looks, am I right?
Note – Maybe it would have been better for the campaign to have an assortment of smaller badges to choose from. The default badge is quite huge, occupying the usual 400-width blog entry space. The badge is also automatically centered.
Speedlinking October 24 2006
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 24th, 2006Gail has launched a new blog about dogs. Pinoy Dog Lover is a resource about man’s best friend. She lives with 13 dogs and 4 other humans.
RockEd Philippines starts a new Futkal project in partnership with the Gawad Kalinga sites. The project leader for this endeavor is Peter Amores. Futkal is the local version of street soccer and forms part of the overall community development plan of GK to help educate children about values and keep them away from the “evil things” of the street.
Basang Panaginip has found the time (I salute you, fuhrer!) to aggregate all the Filipino blogs and rank them according to TLA’s Blog Juice Calculator.
Mike Abundo finally redesigns his blog.
HIP gets into blog network buzz
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 22nd, 2006So the cat is out of the bag. Adel Gabot and I had the privilege to be interviewed by Erwin Oliva for an article in today’s Infotech section of INQ7.
Adel Gabot, group editor at HIP, said the “print as a medium” is in transition. Thus HIP is working on integrating their specialized magazines with an online counterpart. “Both mediums will feed on each other,” he added. (source)
Apart from the blog network, Adel also talked about the tag mobile service which HIP is offering with our magazines. Currently these blogs are now up and running:
Technology
Mobile Philippines
PC Magazine Philippines
GAME! Magazine
Lifestyle
Golf Digest Philippines
F&B World and Baking Press
BURN Magazine
I would like to mention that behind the corporate blog network are several talented people working on content, the backend and sales. Apart from our fantastic corporate sales team and editorial department, there are several other guys and gals who have made this project possible.

b5media is looking for a few good bloggers
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 19th, 2006According to my channel editor, the b5media technology channel is looking for a few good technologists in the Getting Things Done department. If you are a wiz at CSS, XHTML, Java, photography, Photoshop and want to share your passion, don’t hesitate to drop Aaron Brazell an email with your blog suggestion.

Apart from technology topics, b5media is also in need of the following:
b5media, one of the networks I write for, is composed of a passionate group of bloggers who love to share their knowledge and experiences about the topics they love.
Why Shel Israel should come to the Philippines
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at October 18th, 2006The announcement was made earlier today that b5media, the online blog network I write for has sent Shel “the Ambassador of Content” Israel to Europe to engage in discussions with local folk about local content.
Seems vague when reading it but this is part of a world tour series to bring home a heterogeneous idea pool of content from different parts of the world. What makes content such a powerful tool isn’t the content per se, but the context of how content is disseminated given the region, culture and other influences (technology being a prime mover) is what makes content even more engaging. If content were a top, context is what gives it its spin.
So Shel goes to Europe and one day maybe Asia, specifically the Philippines. Shel, if you’re reading this here are some reasons why the Philippines is worth visiting (apart from the fact that we are an Asian tourist hub and several b5ers reside here):
