The Death of Publishing 1.0?
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at August 31st, 2006I’m sure you’ve heard about this before. It’s been summed up so many times as “the death of print publishing, hello Internet,” “Byebye paper, hello computer screen,” “Save the trees! Stop printing on paper!”
Of course, there are several arguments that claim how print will continue to be a relatively niched medium of communication in the same way that people still use film cameras, do theatre and listen to vinyl.
We’re working on a little experiment that has to do with a dash of frivolity, online ad space and new media. Byebye Publishing 1.0, hello Publishing 2.0.
“I am a Photographer” and other stereotype idiosyncrasies
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at August 30th, 2006
I started my Photoworks classes yesterday under Leo Castillo. This is actually part of my “self development plan” which I’ve been putting off for some time. Photoworks is a word-of-mouth series of classes that started back in 2002 and has been raved as one of the better digital photography classes in the country. Session one was fun – it was defnitely something worth signing up for because it is meant to be experienced rather than “pare turuan mo na lang yung techniques na natuto mo ok?”
Other self development plans include enrolling in a fun physical activity to keep fit. I’m thinking of joining this group with my cousin. Does anyone do Airsoft? I used to enjoy this when I was young, and apparently airsoft guns have now evolved into really cool pieces of machinery. I want the sniper rifle.
Another self development plan includes traveling (alone). Im thinking of going to Singapore or Cambodia if the budget fits. Any suggestions where I can enrich myself somewhere in Asia apart from the Philippines? I realized that I haven’t been on a “real” vacation in three years. And who knows, maybe a rhinoplasty Toronto.

The Invisible Shield and some branding stuff
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at August 27th, 2006I got a package in the mailbox today. Though this is not odd for me to receive stuff from abroad, it really intrigued me that instead of my name, the senders had placed my blog title “ABUGGEDLIFE” as the recipient. Gee. So this is how blog branding works?
Back in July, I had written about the Invisible Shield screen protector for the iPod. Thanks to the power of trackbacks, the people from ShieldZone contacted me and actually GAVE me a free shield for any gadget that I owned. I have never seen the invisible shield in the Philippines – the usual screen protectors I see are the ultra clear ones from Brando and Martin Fields which you can buy from Digital Walker (Parksquare, Makati, beside Yoshinoya).
So the package finally arrived. Since my iPod did not have a screen (yay iPod shuffle!), I opted for a protector for the other gadget I’m still honeymooning with … my REBEL XT!
What I actually found cool was the text at the back of the packaging. Click to enlarge.
Long term review to follow.
thought for the day
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at August 23rd, 2006Here’s something I learned about women and dating, based on several realizations from friends and past relationships.
“If she hasn’t given you her weekend, then don’t even say you guys are dating.”
Makes sense? Does to me!
Developing that killer instinct
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at August 22nd, 2006If its one thing that the male-dominated developer world has, it is the pride to claim that they are going to develop the next KILLER.
We’re going to build the next iPod killer.
We’re going to develop the next MS Office killer.
We’re going to develop the Treo killer.
Aren’t you just sick of that? When the iPod became successful, was it because it killed something? No, don’t think so. It just made listening to music easier and much cooler.
The cellphone killed the pager because it was a proof on concept that being able to call someone back is much better than having a one way conversation over a text message that appeared on a one-line screen.
Those revolutions don’t happen every year though. So if you want to kill the iPod, or the Treo, or the next great office suite, I suggest you build something that will cause the POINT to tip.
What I’m trying to say is, you should not kill products, you should incite consumer revolutions.

Reasons why my girlfriend left me and other love advice from this guy (best reason to go!)
Okay, that spiel sounded really stupid. But seriously though, the past few months has been quite interesting for local bloggers meeting up casually to exchange notes over sisig and crispy pata.
One thing I’ve noticed though. Most bloggers are practicing geeks and the latter have the tendency to get along quite well. A retinue of skills that most people in the industry posses include at least two of the following:
[] maintains a blog
[] plays an instrument
[] into photography
[] dabbles with photoshop
[] watches anime
[] knows how to program
[] girlfriend left him / her because of hobby obsession
[] knows how to use at least 2 types of operating systems
[] particiaptes in online forums and discussions

The Art that is Hard Gay
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at August 21st, 2006I’ve been recently intrigued by how the Japanese go to such lengths to create very interesting characters like Hard Gay.
The most well-known character developed and portrayed by Sumitani is Hard Gay, introduced in 2002, as whom he finally rose to national prominence in 2005. While the official name is “Razor Ramon HG”, he is most frequently known as “Hard Gay”, or simply HG. Dressing in a tight black leather outfit reminiscent of the Tom of Finland art, he goes around performing acts of charity (yonaoshi, “social improvement”) for unsuspecting bystanders while performing trademark pelvic thrusts and vocalisations, often accompanied by “Livin’ La Vida Loca” by Ricky Martin.
Thanks Adie.
Innove Meet Update
Posted by Jayvee Fernandez at August 19th, 2006When: August 31 2006 (it is not on the 30th anymore)
Where: Temple Bar, Greenbelt 2 | 8:00PM
What to expect: It’s a surprise party (shhh!)
Kudos to Innove for seeing this through. There is a huge potential for non-traditional media. As products get more niched, consumers are slowly becoming more educated not by the big corporations but by the honest little bloggers.
The 12 Apostles of Globe Innove (haha!)
